We switched to CA's Antivirus/Antispam software. It is administered via a
management console but doesn't require an Exchange Server. We, too,
switched from Symantec's Enterprise Edition because of problems with that
program (especially integrating with other pieces of software).

We changed to Trend Micro a couple of years ago.
I don't administer it but it seems to do the job & I've not heard of any
issues.
There were multiple issues in the last couple of years 2007 - 2009. I
especially remember one case where a virus was recognized by Symantec but it
was still able to infect the clients. That was probably the low point with
AV software around here.
To be fair, I know that definitions were not being updated correctly. The
person responsible for administering AV was having trouble with a lot of
other software too. So maybe Symantec was just poorly maintained. And that's
ancient history now, software change so fast.
