OT - anti-virus software recommendations

Wayne, Aaron, et al:

I was looking at the papers on Microsoft forefront. It is an intersting idea. Yeah, it seems like one product, but they allow you to implement multiple (I want to say 5) engines across the network, all to be centrally managed. Therefore, you can have one AV for exchange, one for workstations, one for the perimeter...etc...

I ended up going with Kaspersky (whose engine is used in forefront) because the forefront product was not aged like I would want....but I am going to consider it when my current Kaspersky contract is up.

Not too long ago I faced the same question and ditched Symantec in favor of TrendMicro. Users still notice some hit from the weekly scan (in addition to real-time protection) but not nearly as bad as before. Once I switch everyone over to logging out and locking their PCs instead of power-off at night the overnight scans will have no impact at all. TM is also much easier to manage that Symantec was so I'm pretty satisfied with it...especially since the purchase price was 1/2 the one year price to just renew Symantec.

Did the same thing. Trend Micro is MUCH less invasive and easier to work with (especially the 2008 version).

We got rid of Norton for Eset's NOD32. And yes, we also, would never go
back.
Can't recommend this software enough.

I'm a long time TrendMicro Officescan user and highly recommend it. The
scheduled full scans can bog down a pc a little bit, but you can configure
the realtime scan to exclude the Epicor folders. With that set up I hadn't
really seen or heard about any slowness from my users.

I have used NOD32 for a few years now and continue to love it as an AV
package.

I'm the volunteer technology coordinator at my children's school and I've
switched from NOD32 to E-Eye's Retina/Blink system. http://www.eeye.com The
anti-virus is weak but the rest of the product makes up for it. It replaces
your firewall and looks at every packet via the different protocols and is
able to spot "nasty" behavior that way. For example, we've been protected from
the latest URI vulnerability for quite some time even though Adobe fixed it a
couple of weeks ago and Microsoft fixed it last week. It also looks at all of
your installed software and tells you what versions need to be patched. It is
very extensive and equivalently priced. I wished they would have picked NOD32
to add on to their package. I'm not sure that E-Eye supports Vista yet either.

Thanks for all the responses!

Will probably go with NOD32, but with check into Trend Micro s well.

I moved to Kaspersky in June and I have never used a product where centrailized management literally NEVER had to be touched after the original setup, and I have not had "other" issues.
The only issue I had was Kaspersky considered something on the fedex site to be suspicious, and blocked it. A simple relaxation for the fedex site solved the issue.
Also, there are updates at least once a day, sometimes more.

Also, the management console can be used to roll out non-kaspersky apps to workstations...helpful for companies that do not have other automatic ways to remote-install other apps.

Also, Kaspersky engines are used by other virus protection applications because of their dependability and update frequency.

They are not really in the anti-spam field, but I have other methodologies for that.
