Operation set up when inspection qty differs from job qty

I have a problem I am trying to work out. We require an in process inspection on our parts, we have this as an operation. The inspection qty varies depending on the qty of parts ordered and we wish for this to be a qty only operation. We know how long it takes per part, however the amount inspected is a small subset of the total amount ordered and will differ based on order qty, obviously we do not want to manually adjust on every job and an order qty could be any number of sizes.
I am struggling to set this operation up in a way that doesnt yield a huge variance between est and act hours.

For example Job A customer orders 1000 parts we perform inspection on 15
Job B same part customer orders 1500 parts we perform inspection on 18 for example. Just making up simple numbers to get the point across.

Epicor wants to estimate a time to complete the full qty of 1000 or 1500 respectively and we do not wish to manually adjust the qty parent of the op each job.

Has any one ran into this, curious how you are handling it?

Hi Jake,

My response assumes you do not have quality management software in Kinetic.

I would suggest looking at it the opposite way - if you create a labor only operation, can you complete the qty at that operation for the number inspected? Or, can you have a placeholder part with $0 cost so it doesn’t cause a variance. When I worked for a manufacturing company, we did something similar as we didn’t have the quality module either. I wish we did because there was a lot of paper records keeping track of nonconformances.

Without the quality module, though, how do you handle nonconformances should the in process inspection result is finding defects?

Hi Jen, While your solution does work by simply recording the qty inspected to capture the labor hrs. This will generate a large labor variance between planned and actual. The job will think we planned 10hrs for example to inspect all 100 parts but in actuality we are only required to inspect 10 thus actual hours will only be 1hr.
I am not sure I want to go down the route of a place holder or phantom part the inspection op provides traceability.

In regards to the quality module, are you suggesting we use inspection plans in leu of an operation?

The QA module includes ‘First Article Inspection’ which is designed to handle your situation.

Will the FAI apply labor cost associated with the inspection towards the job as direct labor?
