[Off Topic] Windows-2000-Pro connectivity issue

I am having this same problem on all of the computers we have running
Win2k Pro. All other O/S's are unaffected. Vantage still works fine
on the Win2k machines even though I have the red X. I also get the
message about an error occurring while reconnecting...

I have had some sporadic luck by changing the setting for the net
config server /autodisconnect command on our servers. For info on
this, check out:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q138/3/65.asp

It explains what this autodisconnect feature is and how to set it.

I am still having problems, though, so if anybody has an answer to
this one I'd love to hear it.

I'm trying to debug a Windows-2000-Pro connectivity issue and am looking for
some help.

Here's what's happening:
* Dell Optiplex GX150 - running Windows-2000-Pro
* Using my logon which is Network-Administrator
* Using logon scripts that connect my machine to about 15 network drives

* From within "Explorer" I can see all of my network drives ... However,
some of the connections are showing a RED X under the drive icon on the left
side of the screen. I can still browse them and copy to them. The RED-X's
float - ie - at times I will only see one connection with a RED-X while at
other times I'll see 5 or 6. Their appears to be no direct correlation to
specific servers.

* Also, when a connection shows a RED-X and I'm using software to try and
access files or applications via these connections I will sometimes get a
pop-up box with the following error:

*** An error occurred while reconnecting S: to \\server\share
*** Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.
*** The connection has not been restored.

I'm trying to decide if this is a hardware issue with the integrated
3COM-905C NIC or if it is related to Win-2000-Pro.

We currently have 4 machines with this configuration all of which rarely use
Vantage. I would like to isolate this behavior before installing
Win-2000-Pro on machines that will be using Vantage since I strongly suspect
that what ever is disconnecting these connections will probably give Vantage
the fits.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

"Welcome to the club," Todd. I occasionally get this same error on a WNT4
PII-266 using a Cisco PCI 340/4800 AirNet radio card. As soon as you click on
the apparently red-X'd resource, the connection clears, and all is
well. This also
occurrs on a select FEW 95 computers (with radio cards) that hang off of
machine
tools. One click, and everything is well again. I don't recall having
seen the problem
on hard-wired (10/100bT) computers. I don't believe the issue is 2000Pro
related.
But, I could be wrong . . . it's happened before.

Todd,
I think the Red X's are a W2k thing. But to keep your network connection
okay - check this. In Control Panel
Network & Dial-up Connections
Properties - button (Local Area Connection status)
On the Local Area Connection Properties select the Configure button
under your network card
On the Power Management Tab
Take the Check Mark out of "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power"

Hope this helps.

I'm trying to debug a Windows-2000-Pro connectivity issue and am looking for
some help.

Here's what's happening:
* Dell Optiplex GX150 - running Windows-2000-Pro

Thanks,

Todd Anderson
