[Off Topic] Toner

Now I'm thinking I'm gonna have to move to Ohio. People have manners there?

Lydia
Ok, this is way off topic but things have been a tad slow of late so ...

In the last 4 weeks I have received about 10 calls a week, on average, from
companies selling off-brand toner cartridges. This is a definite increase
from the one call every other day I used to get.

All of these companies claim double or triple the life of a standard
cartridge because they cram twice as much toner into their cartridges ...
etc.

I swear they are all using the same script to read from ... Hello Mr.
Anderson ... Gee, you are a hard guy to get a hold of ... You MUST be a very
busy person ... We know you will love our cartridges ... Is it ok for us to
send you a dozen for you to try ... If you don't like them we will be HAPPY
to take them back ... Blah, Blah, Blah ...

Ugh

Is it really possible that 20 different companies are using the exact same
script or this just one bunch of tele-marketers changing their name every
week ?

Some days I hang up on them immediately and some days I let them babble for
10 minutes while I work on something else and then I hang up on them.

Is anyone else suffering from the same plague ?

On the other hand I will say that the callers selling baby wipes for
cleaning CRT's seem to finally be dying off after the boom times of the
mid-90's. I can't say I'll miss that bunch much. They always started with
"Mr. Anderson, we are pleased to let you know that since you have been such
a great customer in the past that we are going to be sending you a brand new
clock radio for your desk. Along with that we would like to send you a
re-fill order of 1 gross of baby wipes for cleaning your CRT's .... "
Sometimes, you just have to laugh ...

Todd Anderson
I get them almost daily as well. I would also like to add another curve to
the story as well. Most printer companies (HP especially) will void and
warentee or guarentee if you use any other brand toner than theirs. I am
sure other toners work in the printers (I can vouch for that 100%) but I
guess its their way to ensure they make more money. Maybe they put some
additive in their toner so when they get a printer in for maintenance they
can perform tests on the toner in the printer to check if its "HP's" toner
or not.

It has been rather slow lately, hasnt it?

Well, being as we are off topic. I have this discussion with the person who
orders our supplies all the time. Has there ever been any studies made to
show whether or not 3rd party toner is better or worse? I would be
interested to see that.

I don't think you can void someone's warranty just because they didn't use
your own brand of consumable products. I believe prohibiting tie-in sales is
covered in the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act? For those interested, I got this
information from http://www.kingston.com/policy/ftc_mmadocument.asp.

I get the calls but a lot less since I stopped admitting on magazine
qualification forms that I buy printers. Ditto for training services
although the "New" something or other outfit (I won't name names here) calls
once or more a week to offer a free class.

The toner people who do get through get "we buy all our supplies from the
owner's brother who owns an office supply company, goodbye". The owner
doesn't have a brother but it works.

I used to get a lot of terminal cleaner / anti-static spray calls 10-15
years ago and then they went away. Lately they are back. This was a real
scam in the 80's where they would send one set of samples and then an
automatic re-fill every month "On-approval" and it was a real chore to get
them to stop or take the junk back.

The best assertiveness training I have ever has has been practicing saying
"NO" to telemarketers and hanging-up.

A congressman from Fremont Ohio is sponsoring a bill that would limit
telemarketers to the same standards as people with manners. No calls after
a certain hour. Written contracts required for purchases. No badgering of
senior citizens. Other reasonable things. But the best part is a central
list maintained by the state, of people who don't want to be called by
telemarketers. Telemarketers are required to check the central list before
making the call. Several other states either have similar laws, or are
considering them. Privacy is becoming an endangered species. This type of
legislation is the start of bringing it back.

The legislature for the state of Wisconsin is considering having its elderly
population include themselves in a list that would block all unsolicited
telemarketers from antagonizing them. I am feeling a lot older these days.
As for the claims of increased cartridge life all my testing has proved

My most recent tactic with telemarketers when at home:

"S'cuse me just a sec... gotta check dinner on the stove" (what do they
expect calling at 6pm?) "Oh shit! Grease fire!"

Now the fun part: extend arms above head covering *my* ears, hold phone
1-3" from kitchen smoke detector, press test button with other hand
:) BWAAHAHAHA!!!

We used to get those calls regarding copier toner. The Secretary of State
was trying to catch them, so we were advised to tell them we were busy and
ask for a number to call them back. The great thing about this is that it
would cause them to hang up immediately! You might give it a try.

Tell them you work in a "Paperless" office environment. (if such a thing
exists?)

If you don't have any printers, there is no need for toner.

Tell them they should find a job working for a way to cut printing, not
providing a way of printing twice as much!

Save the Trees!!!

It works for me.

Tell them you work in a "Paperless" office environment. (if such a thing
exists?)

If you don't have any printers, there is no need for toner.

Tell them they should find a job working for a way to cut printing, not
providing a way of printing twice as much!

Save the Trees!!!

It works for me.

Funny you should mention the call back issue. The last person who called
today hung up when I asked for a phone number.

I think I'll try "I'm busy now - please give me your phone number so I can
call you back" ... I wonder how many will hang up.

I also like the fire alarm idea ...

We used to get those calls regarding copier toner. The Secretary of State
was trying to catch them, so we were advised to tell them we were busy and
ask for a number to call them back. The great thing about this is that it
would cause them to hang up immediately! You might give it a try.

I agree. Toner calls are usually a scam.

If your phone system has the capability of transfering someone to an outside
number,

Just say, "um, i'm sorry sir, let me transfer you to the appropriate
department."

The appropriate department in this case would be the local Police
Department, or Better Business Bureau.
