[Off Topic] Thin clients without using WTS/Citrix

Interesting product but I would be worried that you will have to purchase a
copy of Windows XP for every client that connects to the host PC. This
would drive the TCO through the roof. Instead of spending $67 for a
Terminal Service Cal you would be required to purchased an XP lic for
$199.00.
Just a thought.

Looking to see if anyone has already gone down this road.

I'd like to phase out PC's on desktops. ( I'm really tired of this game!
)

Reasons:

* Maintenance nightmare ... I get tired of walking around and I have 3
remote facilities, 2 of which in are different states.
* PC's in shop floor environments are problematic.
* Performance on remote PC's accessing client-server aps across a WAN
is
poor.
* etc. etc. etc.

I'd like to switch to this model:

* Small box w/no fans that are bulletproof running a cheap, easy to
maintain operating system, along with VNC or PcAnywhere to which I can
hookup monitors, keyboard, mouse, printers, and usb devices. No
applications running except remote control software. ( can you say
"Terminal" )

* I do NOT want to run WTS / Citrix.

* Instead I want to migrate to either ultra-small form factor PC's or
PC-Blades located IN my server room under lock and key.

Using PC's in my server room is easy enough and cheap.

WYSE is suggesting I look at 9450Xe, 9455Xl, and 941Gxl, 3 XP-Embedded
Winterm models.

Does anyone have any experience with WYSE or other thin style clients in
a
non-WTS/Citrix environment ????

TIA for any feedback!

WYSE is a great company. I have worked with them often in the past but that
was for Unix Terminals. Couldn't give you any advice on how their other
terminals run. Their sales and support staff are great. I looked at doing
as you suggested with PcAnywhere and VNC but neither offered the speed that
WTS did. We went with WTS and Televideo thin clients running CE.Net.

Why are you not wanting to look at WTS / Citrix?

We use Citrix, and love it! We have wireless forklift computers
running Vantage, Wyse thin clients for Data Collection (no moving
parts), and an we connect all our branches (4) across the Internet.
(T1 at home office, DSL at remote branches). The speed is very good!

We use load balancing across 3 Citrix servers.
More than half of our 70 Vantage logins are thru Citrix. Vantage
upgrades are a breeze for the Citrix clients. just upgrade the server
and all users are upgraded as well.

Britt,

My heartburn with WTS/Citrix is:

* The cost of the servers ... How large are yours for how many clients?

* MS licensing ... Last I knew MS dictated that you had to have a client
license for EVERY possible WTS client as opposed to actual need. So for
applications like Visual Basic where I currently have 3 user licenses if I
run WTS with 70 clients and Visual Basic is one of the published apps MS has
always told me I would need 70 licenses for VB. Same goes for any other
software that is run under WTS. We have a number of software packages that
are used by select groups of users. If I have to purchase 70 licenses for
every app published under WTS the cost of the licensing just destroys the
economics.

How do you handle the licensing issues?

Todd

We run everything from MS Office to Vantage. The only thing we dont run on
our T.S. is AutoCad. The only people who don't have a thin client are
Engineers and people with document scanners. Everything is easier with the
thin clients. We use Televideo products and I really like them. Our sales
rep is Mike Miller of Miller and Assoc. His number is (920) 748-4800 and
his email is mmillerllc@.... We run 40 users on a HP6000 with 6 750
Zeon 2mbL2 Processors and 8GB or ram. I think I can run at least three
times that on this machine. Cpu usage runs around 6%. I have seen it peek
at 20% when everyone is turning on in the morning. I got it on ebay for
$3,700.00.

WYSE is suggesting I look at 9450Xe, 9455Xl, and 941Gxl, 3 XP-Embedded
Winterm models.

Does anyone have any experience with WYSE or other thin style clients in a
non-WTS/Citrix environment ????

TIA for any feedback!

Yes you need a TS cal for every client device (except Windows 2000 or
XP) that connects to the Terminal Server.

As far as your VB licenses, can install VB for a particular user instead
on the whole box. That user will be the only one able to use VB, so you
only need a license for that user. Another way would be to publish VB
as an app, and only allow certain users access.

All the "licensing experts" I have talked to say that you need a license
for any user who is ABLE to access the application.

Britt,

My heartburn with WTS/Citrix is:

* The cost of the servers ... How large are yours for how many clients?

* MS licensing ... Last I knew MS dictated that you had to have a
client
license for EVERY possible WTS client as opposed to actual need. So for
applications like Visual Basic where I currently have 3 user licenses if
I
run WTS with 70 clients and Visual Basic is one of the published apps MS
has
always told me I would need 70 licenses for VB. Same goes for any other
software that is run under WTS. We have a number of software packages
that
are used by select groups of users. If I have to purchase 70 licenses
for
every app published under WTS the cost of the licensing just destroys
the
economics.

How do you handle the licensing issues?

Todd

Why are you not wanting to look at WTS / Citrix?

We use Citrix, and love it! We have wireless forklift computers
running Vantage, Wyse thin clients for Data Collection (no moving
parts), and an we connect all our branches (4) across the Internet.
(T1 at home office, DSL at remote branches). The speed is very good!

We use load balancing across 3 Citrix servers.
More than half of our 70 Vantage logins are thru Citrix. Vantage
upgrades are a breeze for the Citrix clients. just upgrade the server
and all users are upgraded as well.

Looking to see if anyone has already gone down this road.

I'd like to phase out PC's on desktops. ( I'm really tired of this game!
)

Reasons:

* Maintenance nightmare ... I get tired of walking around and I have 3
remote facilities, 2 of which in are different states.
* PC's in shop floor environments are problematic.
* Performance on remote PC's accessing client-server aps across a WAN
is
poor.
* etc. etc. etc.

Britt,

Are you running Win-2000 server / TS by itself or with the CITRIX addons
?
