Off topic: Terminal Server

No, your terminal server can be win2k, and your domain controller can be NT4
(but I don't think it works the other way around)

As far as the print notifications are concerned, all you need to do is go to
the server (same for NT or 2000) and go Start-Settings-Printers and then
select File-Server Properties. On the Advanced tab, deselect the Notify
remote users...

Hope this helps,

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Win2000Server/NT question regarding PRINT messages

I'm hoping for some quick/slick answer to this frustrating network issue...

Ever since our Win200Server was installed (by an outside consultant)... Now
any NT station or Win200Pro workstation gets additional Print messages each
time that user prints. Basically it says: "PRINT JOB zzz Completed. Size is
0 Bytes". The second says "PRINT JOB xxy Completed. Size is xyz Bytes."

Is there a way to turn this message off at the server and/or the 2000/NT
workstations?

Secondary request: Our Win2000Pro users have noticed that when they click
"Print" in Outlook Express, it now brings up a Print dialog box. Previously,
it print directly to the default printer unless you clicked File/Print and
selected another printer. Our new Win2000 users are frustrated at the 4
clicks to print something instead of the previous one click.

Real easy Troy - stop the messenger service on the workstations and set the
startup to manual.

Can't help you with the Outlook Express print problem though.

Rick
This could be problematic, since this would disable the ability of the admin
to send broadcast messages to the users. I believe the Messenger service
needs to be running for this feature to work.

I thought I would clarify something first, in case it is relevent to the
problem described below. Our Old server currently is still the Primary
Domain name thingy (what do you guys call it). The new server (which runs
Vanage now), is not the primary, but will be eventually as we phase things
over to the new one. Currently, printers are still connect to the old
server. Does that clarify anything? Any solutions on stopping the print
messages?

BTW Troy,
Just an FYI,
You wont be able to make your new server the PDC. Windows 2000 uses Active
Directory and even if you upgrade your current PDC to Active Directory, it
will remain the "First Tree in the Forest" <---Active directory term for
PDC. The global catelog resides on the First Tree in the Forest. You cant
move your current Global Catelog without blowing away your current domain.
I went throught the same thing last year. Its a total pain and even worse
if you have MS Exchange.
Just some friendly advice.

I went through the same thing as well. However, you can move the GC using AD
Sites and Services to another DC.

I had to do this as well as transfer all FSMO (Flexible Single Master
Operation) Roles, from the PDC (note PDC is only used for backward
compatibility with NT 4.0. In Windows 2000, all Servers are either DCs or
member servers), to another DC.

What I did was transfer all FSMO roles and the GC. Then I ran DCPROMO on the
PDC and demoted it to a member server. Everything ran smoothly. Well as
smooth as you are going to get for a Microsoft product.

Troy,

No need to reboot the server. Open a command line window and type:

"NET STOP SPOOLER"

Wait until the service has stopped. Then type:

"NET START SPOOLER"

This will restart the print spooler service and your notification
messages will have disappeared.

Our "computer guy" that installed the new server says it can be done if you do.. x ... y... and z. We'll have to reenter all the usernames and passwords by hand again, but no biggy. We'll take the old one off-line and reformat it for a different use when that happens.

Real easy Troy - stop the messenger service on the workstations and set

startup to manual.

Did you ever resolve your permissions on W2K users? Let me know. If not, I

I'm going to try the uncheck "Notify remote users..." thing on the server
first. Have to wait for a reboot this evening to see if it disables the
print message.

NEW QUESTION: We have shared engineering files on the new server. They are
shared with permissions. All Win95/98 users who have full access are
allowed to open/modify, etc. However, the Win2000Pro users who have full
access are only allowed read access for some reason. Their names/passwords
are set up just like everyone else's. Why can't they get full access?

SOLUTION: The Win2000Pro (actually XP Pro) machine was not set upcorrectly,
in that it had a workgroup, but did not have a domain. Thus, it could
browse all share folders on the network somehow, but could not access any
folders with restrictions.

Thanks Fausto, for your extra help.

If I upgrade my NT 4.0 Terminal server to Windows 2000 do I need my
domain controller to also be Windows 2000 or will the licensing work
with a NT 4.0 Domain controller? Anyone doing this?

SOLUTION: The Win2000Pro (actually XP Pro) machine was not set
upcorrectly,
in that it had a workgroup, but did not have a domain. Thus, it could
browse all share folders on the network somehow, but could not access
any
folders with restrictions.

Thanks Fausto, for your extra help.

We are running with this setup. There is a trick to getting the license
server to run on the terminal server rather than the PDC. I think its a
registry change, but I'm trying to find the KB article.
