[OFF TOPIC] Shift Schedules

Our plant is set up with basically four shifts to run 24/7. First and second Mon-Thursday (5-330/330-130, second receives a shift differential), Fri-Sun (6am – 6pm, work 36 paid 40 with shift differential), and Fri-Sun (6pm-6am, paid 40 with a higher shift differential). While it can be a little tougher staffing that weekend nights we typically are only running 3 – 5 guys and have been able to make it work for some time. People really enjoy the extended time off and that has been a big attractor more than the paid differentials.

I am interested in finding out what other companies who run 7 days a week do for shift scheduling and filling weekend coverage. Our goal would be to run 24/7, but we have a lot of trouble filling our nights and weekends as it is –forget about weekend nights, we have never been able to find anyone to work those.Â

We manufacture plastic injection molds, with every job being unique, so our machine operators are skilled operators often working to +/- 0.0001”.

Our current shifts consists of:

·         Regular 5-day Mon-Fri Day shift.

·         Monday-Thurs Night Shift (includes 15% differential and paid lunch/breaks)

·         Rotating weekend shifts which works every other weekend and 2 days during the week / alternate days each week (includes 10% differential and paid lunch/breaks)

This has been our set-up since starting up weekend shift over 10 years ago.

We have several issues with this configuration including; Quality issues, inconsistency, employee morale, poor communication, high cost for weekend hours actually generated, significant shift overlap.

My boss has asked me to rethink our shifts. I have been doing some research on-line but thought I would ask here and see if anyone else had something that worked well.

Thanks for any feedback,

Sarah
