(off topic) partitioning

Norton Ghost works fine with NT. We do a backup of our C:\ drives on servers after every major change.

One other option is to use Ghost. Once you save a partion in a Ghost image
you can write it to any size partion or drive (as long as the actual data -
not partion - size of the original partion is less than the size of the new
spot you want to move it to).

For one machine Ghost is less than $100.

Hi! I need to repartition 1 of my servers. I want to give my D: partition more "space". Does anyone know of a utility that would help me to do this? Right now I'm not looking to buy a new harddrive, just give my partition a little more space. I would like some utility or software that is fairly seamless.

Any ideas?

PowerQuest's Partition Magic ($59.83 @ www.cdw.com item 251577) will do the
trick. The only downside is that the partition that you are consolidating
to, needs to have enough space to accommodate the merge. Once the merge is
complete, you'll get your space back.

For instance, if you have a 3 GB partition on C with 1 GB available space
and 2 GB partition on D with 1.5 GB used, and you want to merge D into C, it
won't work. There won't be enough space on C to accommodate the 1.5 GBs of
data. You would need to free up another 500 MB of space on the C partition
to make the merge work.

The actual numbers may vary. See software for details. :-)

Wendy, I've used Partition Magic 6.0 to repartition Win98 drives and it
worked great. I've never used on NT but Partition Magic says that it
supports NT, 2000, ME and 95/98. For $60 you can't go wrong. PC Mag gives it
two thumbs up as well.

PowerQuest's software is smart enough to recognize the difference between a

For that you need Server Magic and that little package lists for

Having said that, I think the software is still a great buy. About six
months ago I was in a similar position. Like you, I needed to allocate more
room to my C: drive which had long ago been partitioned to 1 GB (thanks
Microsoft) and was quickly running out of room. I spent more than 30 hours
trying to make it work on my own without success. I finally broke down and
spent the money on Server Magic and got the job done in less than 30
minutes.

When the CFO questioned me about the wisdom of spending nearly $500 on a
software package that I was likely to use only one time, I suggested that we
sit down and figure out what 30 hours of my time was worth, not to mention
the cost of the server being down. The alternative, I suggested, was for us
to completely reformat the drives and reinstall all of the software
packages, one by one, and then try to get the configurations back exactly
the way they were before. Now what would that cost?

Suddenly, he agreed with me that the software was well worth the money.

I have sucessfully used Ghost with NT4 Workstation. Some of the older versions didn't support FAT32 partitions (Win ME & Win2000). I believe Ghost 2001 supports 2000 & ME.

There is an issue with using any utility to make a clone of an NT
system. Apparently, there is a unique system security ID that is generated
at installation time. Multiple clones with the same ID on a network can
supposedly confuse NT server.

This site has an explanation, as well as a free utility to work around it:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/newsid.shtml

-Wayne Cox
Ghost has always worked with NT 4, but not from WITHIN NT4. You boot to DOS and run Ghost. The only issue is Security ID's. You can't have 2 machines with the same SID on your network, so you run GhostWalker to change the SID on any clones that you make. Win2000 makes this a whole lot easier cause you run a utility called Sysprep BEFORE you ghost the original machine, then it automatically creates the new SID when you start the new machine.

You may have been misinformed. I use it regularly for 95/98/NT. As long
as you use Ghost Walker after an NT Ghost session, NT runs fine-even with
multiple NTFS partitions.

Update... Actually the product is only $29.95, and so far it is working great on single disk workstations. But when I try to run it on my hardware based RAID 5 server, I am getting a DPMI error - just launching the program (when it tries to read the disks). I am trying to work through this (there IS no SUPPORT for this product-to speak of) and will give results here when I do!

room to my C: drive which had long ago been partitioned to 1 GB (thanks

Hi! I need to repartition 1 of my servers. I want to give my D:
partition more "space". Does anyone know of a utility that would help me to
do this? Right now I'm not looking to buy a new harddrive, just give my
partition a little more space. I would like some utility or software that
is fairly seamless.

 Any ideas?

There is an issue with using any utility to make a clone of an NT
system. Apparently, there is a unique system security ID that is generated
at installation time. Multiple clones with the same ID on a network can
supposedly confuse NT server.

This site has an explanation, as well as a free utility to work around it:
