Off Topic Laptops

No, I guess I mis-understood the issue.

Yes, Brian, that is correct. I'm curious about Todd if his multi-mode is
able to view two DIFFERENT things on both external and LCD. I'm not trying
to brag about the Ashton Digital here, I'm really curious now what other
laptops are capable of viewing two separate monitors with different
information on each one at the same time.

But maybe this thread is dead and we should get on with Vantage stuff.

Yes, I can attach an external display, and I can choose if I want to see
the
laptop display, the external display, or both.

What I think someone in this
thread is saying though, is that they can attach an external display,
and
view one thing on the laptop display and something different on the
external
display at the same time. That, I can't do.

All laptops I have used have the ability to accept an external video
display
whether it be a monitor or projector or whatever. You typically will use
the
function key plus another key on your keyboard to toggle between three
options; LCD only, External only or both.

I've used WinBook in the past and they have a great bang for the buck. The
have good support and lots of good features. Their web site is at

more expensive, but very good. www.dell.com <http://www.dell.com/>

That's a feature of Windows 98 not the laptop.

I've had really good experiences with Toshiba Satellites as a good "bang for
the buck" laptop. They even stand up to our field service technicians
working in dirty press rooms. I've also had good luck with IBM Thinkpads
and they are selling the base model for dirt cheap now - under $800 I think.
The only Dell I have is less than a month old and has been somewhat flaky
since new. Also have two AST Ascentias that are 5 years old and still going
strong.

By the way, this price of $1800 was three months ago. I know prices change every month. Check the web site for current price. The closest laptop with an 800mhz PIII at the time was $2500, had less RAM and no video capabilities.

You need the right hardware to do it, however. This laptop has a video card that has dual monitor capabilities built into it, whereby both the laptop screen and external screen can be showing different information. Is this how all laptops work? Maybe I was naive...

True, the dual screen was a feature in Windoze 98. But you also need two
video cards to make it work (or one special card, like some of the
Matroxen.) Most notebooks I've used, the external video connector is just
an alternate connector to the same video chipset & hardware.

I'm inclined to think the video is something special in Troy's
machine. Will have to check it out. That would be very useful if others
can do it.

Oh, and notebooks in general: AVOID COMPAQ. They're overpriced and their
performance s**ks. Also had flaky bios problems that made them nearly
unusable. None of the patches that Compaq claimed would help corrected
them. While I haven't personally used one long term, the Dells I've messed
with seem to be fast and reliable.

All laptops I have used have the ability to accept an external video display
whether it be a monitor or projector or whatever. You typically will use the
function key plus another key on your keyboard to toggle between three
options; LCD only, External only or both.

I have an IBM Thinkpad, with Win2000. If it is capable of doing
multi-monitoring, I can't figure out how, and I can't find any
documentation
on it or any mention of it anywhere.

I've not used many laptops in my day. I'd love to know if others can do
this. I've never heard someone say that any others could, and none have
touted the possibility in ads that I've seen. Maybe they assume everyone
knows it. Can anyone else confirm that their laptop has multi-monitor
capability? Mine has three modes: single, mirror (both monitors view the
same thing), multi-monitor (both monitors view separate information).

I would say that most every if not every laptop built today
has this capability.

Yes, I can attach an external display, and I can choose if I want to see the
laptop display, the external display, or both. What I think someone in this
thread is saying though, is that they can attach an external display, and
view one thing on the laptop display and something different on the external
display at the same time. That, I can't do.

Yes, Brian, that is correct. I'm curious about Todd if his multi-mode is able to view two DIFFERENT things on both external and LCD. I'm not trying to brag about the Ashton Digital here, I'm really curious now what other laptops are capable of viewing two separate monitors with different information on each one at the same time.

But maybe this thread is dead and we should get on with Vantage stuff.

What I think someone in this

view one thing on the laptop display and something different on the external
display at the same time. That, I can't do.
