Hi all...
What we want to do is this...we want to be able to see how much time employees are spending on the internet and where they are going possibly. What good possibilities are out there for internet monitoring? Price is also a factor aswell is performance. We would like to be able to monitor from one workstation. We'd rather not spend anymore money on any new hardware either...are there software solutions out there? Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!

Are you using MS Proxy, by chance? If all you want to do is see where users
are going, you can find it in the proxy logs.

If you still want software, we use Surfcontrol Superscout. Its an excellent
reporting tools as well as allowing you to control access by user,
workstation and group and lets you restrict access to specific categories or
websites.

Gary,

I would suggest Elron's Internet Manager Software
We use it to check surfing habits and review the employees time "online".
This software can also be used to block sites: explicit, financial, sports, pretty much whatever you want.
We are not currently using those functions at this time.
It picks up everything including the html mail footers at the bottom of these emails.

We also give each employee an internet usage policy so they know when and where thay can surf.

We have our system set to record 3 weeks worth of users surfing.
It seems to give a good pattern of actual usage.

If I remember correctly it does want at least a 500 MHz P2 machine to run all the functions.
We are using a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz WinNT Server for monitoring with no problems.

The monitoring software can be used via a web browser at any workstation as long as you have the password and address of the monitors html page.

We have looked at products from www.websense.com and www.webtrends.com to do
the same thing. Have not decided on what to purchase yet.

Our DNS is on a unix machine. I can have it log all the lookup requests
out to a text file, then grep through it for stuff of interest. It's not
100% -- since you can punch up an innocent web page that references a
banner ad at hoteasychicks.com and both will be logged. But it gives a
quick indication of how well people are behaving. Most folks here think it
is monitored much more than it really is, and keep themselves in line
fairly well.
