OFF TOPIC (e-mail virus)

In addition to the other suggestions.. I have warned users about viewing
email in HTML mode if ActiveX support is enabled in their browser. There is
a potential issue in ActiveX scripting for downloading and self executing
code. We have set Internet Explorer security custom settings to at least
prompt before allowing ActiveX. As far as I know there is no protection
from this in virus scanners. Mostly I prefer email to be in text only mode
but I'm no sure of the email services which run in a browser anyway allow
this.

Does anyone know if there is a threat of virus infection if an employee
checks e-mail at an online service like "Hotmail" or "Yahoo mail" over a T1.
We have a firewall that takes care of our SMTP server, but don't know about
the online services. We are in the process of making some company policy on
this. Any input would help and you can e-mail me offline to keep traffic
down on the group.

Occasionally our sales people open a new order, then get (distracted) or whatever, then open up another sales order, leaving the first one blank. Does anyone have a RB report to identify these so they can be deleted and not show up on open order reports?
I don't have one, but just wrote one for PO's yesterday. Our purchasers sometimes open a PO, then call a Vendor to get a price. After 15 minutes, the client timeout kicks them off. They are left with a PO with no lines. To identify these, I asked Crystal to link POHeader with PODetail using a 'left-outer' join. That way, when I a Select records without any detail, I can still see the header. My select formula says: "POHeader.OpenPO=True and PODetail.POLine < 1".

Something similar might work for your Blank Sales Orders.

Troy,

Why do you have client timeout set to 15 minutes ?

That's very aggressive. We have ours set to 1 hr and my users frequently
have nasty things to say about it/me. At 15 minutes there would be a
lynching.

Are you that tight on user licenses ? What I found was that the people who
"Used" Vantage every 15 to 30 minutes were not my problem. It was the
people who logged on first thing in the morning and then parked all day that
were eating up my licenses. After 6 years of persuasion I still have users
who believe that I'm nuts and that the whole point of a PC is that you
should open up EVERY program you MIGHT need when you boot up the PC and then
you should leave them open for days at a time. They also have a hard time
understanding why their PC's run slowly and crash frequently. ( Yes, I have
tried speaking VERY slowly using nothing but small words ... to no avail. )

When we went to 5.0 and lost 5 licenses, we had TERRIBLE problems with people not being able to log on. Also, there are certain departments (ie. accounting) who NEED the 37 minutes (or more) to enter large Groups for posting. So eventually we introduced Mike Podlin's ClientTime, which can be configured by workstation. The default was 15 minutes, and other than a few specific workstations, we have left it at 15 minutes. Virtually no one has complained, so we left it there.

I know that's a long answer to a short question, but there you have it. We still occasionally (a couple times a week maybe) get people calling saying "would someone please log off of Vantage?", but it's a rarity. If that keeps up, I may bump up the time by 5 minutes or so (without telling anyone) and see what happens.

you can set individual timeout limits by going to the user's workstation and
adding the following text into the win.ini:

Troy,

Actually in one of the later patches in 3.0 the licensing rules were
enforced and we had the same problem. We requested and received credit
for the extra data licenses when we purchased additional user licenses.

was the
people who logged on first thing in the morning and then
parked all day that
were eating up my licenses. After 6 years of persuasion I
still have users
who believe that I'm nuts and that the whole point of a PC is
that you
should open up EVERY program you MIGHT need when you boot up
the PC and then
you should leave them open for days at a time. They also have
a hard time
understanding why their PC's run slowly and crash frequently.
( Yes, I have
tried speaking VERY slowly using nothing but small words ...
to no avail. )

I don't have one, but just wrote one for PO's yesterday. Our
purchasers
sometimes open a PO, then call a Vendor to get a price. After
15 minutes,
the client timeout kicks them off. They are left with a PO
with no lines.
To identify these, I asked Crystal to link POHeader with
PODetail using a
'left-outer' join. That way, when I a Select records without
any detail, I
can still see the header. My select formula says:
"POHeader.OpenPO=True and
PODetail.POLine < 1".

Something similar might work for your Blank Sales Orders.

Occasionally our sales people open a new order, then get
(distracted) or
whatever, then open up another sales order, leaving the first
one blank.
Does anyone have a RB report to identify these so they can be
deleted and
not show up on open order reports?

Take the machine away and give them the box it came in - they probably won't
notice the difference.

Most online mail services automatically check for viruses. I would still be
weary of attachments though and encourage the users to scan any attachments
through your local virus checker before opening.

Hotmail and Yahoo do have virus protection on their servers, but I wouldn't
guarantee that for all web e-mail servers. A company should always scan
everything coming in or out.

There are two types of scanning: E-mail, and file scanning. If your
firewall scans emails for viruses, that's great, but it isn't scanning
internet downloads. When a user opens an attachment from yahoo or hotmail,
it is essentially an internet download. If they click open, instead of save
as, the file is run, There is no opportunity for the user to scan the file.
Your firewall is not scanning the file. If you only have server file
protection, and the user saves the file to their own hard disk, and open it,
instant infection.

If a workstation has any ability to have files transfered onto it, whether
by floppy, internet, or CDROM, there should be automatic file scanning AV
software on the workstation, and on any server that is connected to that
workstation.

We use norton corporate edition for file and e-mail, and have clients
installed on every workstation which are updated on a weekly basis. We get
at least 5 infected emails sent to us a month, which are scanned and
cleaned.

If you base your antivirus procedure on something that you have to rely on
the user for (manually scanning files, not opening certain attachments from
certain people, clicking the virusscan update button), you will be infected
eventually.

Note though, that in your virus scanning efforts, to exclude the Vantage
directories in the real time scan. Of course performing a scheduled scan at
night when everyone's off wouldn't hurt. Refer to 181MPS on eranet. for
more detail.

Also note that if you are downloading a file, and click "OPEN", that file is
still being saved to your hard disk in a temp directory before being opened.
If you have antivirus software running, any known viruses within that file
will be detected, provided that the software is indeed running, and has the
latest updates, etc..
