[Off Topic] Dell PC pricing

I usually order my Dell stuff from the outlet site:

-Mostly systems of which the sale fell through after they were built,
refurbished items, or stock liquidation.
-Take a few days to familiarize yourself with systems and pricing, so you
can jump on a good deal as soon as you see one.
-Have credit card handy to put down on a system, if you don't it will be
gone in minutes.
-You can use PO's, if you are "set up" for it with Dell. If you do, lock in
on a system and stop at the payment page. Call your Dell Outlet rep, give
him the system ID, then release it. He will be able to see it and put it on
a PO for you.
-Same warranty as "new" systems, same prices for additional coverage (highly
recommended).
-Systems cannot be customized, as they are already built.
-For the same reason you have no OS choice.
-Selection changes by the hour, although more seems available in the early
mornings and late afternoons.

In the past I have been able to buy very good systems, for close to half of
the "new" price. FWIW, my Outlet rep is RJ Melia; 800-879-3355 ext 49548.
He has been very helpful in the past, finding systems or alternatives for
me, that hadn't even been placed on the outlet site yet...

We did. We got 5 for $398.00. They were Dell Dimension 2400 Workstations
with 2.2 Ghz celeron processors.

I wondered about the Dimensions. Are they as good as the Optoplex?

I have been told the network integration is not as good as the Optoplex.

I wonder if you are paying more for the same thing with the Optoplex.

I would like to hear how well the dimensions work out.

We only buy DELL workstations these days. I started out years ago with the
Dimension systems, but the Precision workstations have better hardware.
I've had several of the Dimenions loose the hard drive after a few months of
service. We discovered by the time you add the Operating system you need
and the memory to run our favorite memory hogs...Vantage, Winfax, Outlook
you can get a Precision Workstation for about $100 more.

I've used half a dozen dimensions over the past few years. No problems.
But don't get the Dimension "L" - they seem to break down frequently -
pretty lightweight in all respects - can't handle business use. I've had a
Dimension XPS866 for my workstation at work for the last 3 years. No
problems. My rep told me that the main difference between optiplexes and
dimensions is the frequency of design changes - Optiplex designs carry on
longer. The optiplexes seem better designed for easier servicing. From
what I've seen, you're going to spend the money one way or the other - I'd
rather spend it up front on a decent system, than spend it chasing problems
later, if I can avoid it.

Personal opinion ... The Optiplex boxes are better built and the components
are better tested.

Dell advertises the Dimension line as the latest and greatest / fastest
stuff while the Optiplex is more of a Maytag line.

Ok, so I've got about 40 Dell Optiplex P-133 mini-towers that are pushing 6
years old now. A fair number are out in our shop and are literally buried
under a 1/2 inch of accumulated dust. These puppies will NOT die. Mind
you I wish they would.

So there you go ... I'd recommend doing some research and ONLY buy PC's that
have a life expectancy of about 2 - 2.5 years that way you won't have to
ponder how to kill of 6 year old PC's .... Might I suggest Packard-Bell ?
