OFF TOPIC - Blocking Email Attachments

Hmmm. Just compared original message URL to what I ended up at and they are
the same. So one minute it works and the next, not (Microsoft message
saying page does not exist). Guess it pays to keep trying.

Thanks Richard. Although the link did not work for me (looks like MS moved
it under a 2000 folder) I was able to find the info via other related links.
In case anyone else has trouble finding the info here are a couple
alternatives:

Outlook 2000 SR-1a Security Release - which blocks certain attachments
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx
<http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx>
<http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx> >

Outlook 2000 Administrative Tools (so set file types):
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/outsecupdate.htm
<http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/outsecupdate.htm>
<http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/outsecupdate.htm> >

These look exactly like what I (and mny others I'm sure) have been looking
for. I am anxious to try it out.
Thanks again,

You could have a look on Microsoft's site at
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx.
<http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx.>
<http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx.> > But be
careful
what you install where. I installed one of these updates once on my machine
and could'nt access files that I wanted to, no matter if my name was in the
list or not. I think at the time I wanted the most secure computer but ended
up reinstalling .

What we have downloaded is out2ksec.exe(2Mb) and o2ksec_a.exe(7.5Mb).
I know we installed a security update on all computers and the admin tool in
the public folders is a "post" where we control the settings. I'll send you
an image off-list of what it looks like.

There is also a registry key that has to be added or modified so that the
Outlook client looks on the server for the security settings :
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Security]"CheckAdminSettings"
=dword:00000001

Now I could get back to you next week some time with more accurate
information, after I check with the other tech who helped install it.

I know this has been discussed in the past but has anyone found a way to
block email attachments such as ".exe" files? I'm looking for a simple and
inexpensive way to do this.

We use GFI Mail Essentials. Around 1500$ for 50-100 users I believe. Does a
lot more too. www.gfi.com. Has a 30 or 60 day trial as well.

Most anti-virus programs that run over Exchange have this ability. We use
McAfee Groupshield Exchange and it has several options for
filtering/blocking attachments. I'm pretty much blocking anything but CAD
drawings, pictures, and MS Office documents.

If you're using Exchange and Outlook, you can configure the security
settings by user and include there extensions that you don't want those
people to have access to. We have it in our Public Folders, with restricted
access, and it works great. The tech that set it up is gone but I can have a
look. Let me know if you would like more info.

Not sure about Patrick but I sure would. Anything you can do to point me in
the right direction to block specific extensions, especially .vbs, would be
very much appreciated. We are using Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2000 but are
switching to Exchange 2000 in a few weeks.
Thanks,

Todd,
I am running Antigen by Sybari www.sybari.com on my Exchange server.
This one and the one from Trend (I think) are the 2 favorites for email
scanners. Check out a couple of the Exchange Server sites for
recommendations.
I have been able to keep out Nimda and SirCam just to name a few.
