ODBC Merant 3.6 and version 5.0

The Open Link drivers are available at http://www.openlinksw.com
<http://www.openlinksw.com/> They have many different versions and really
good support. I would suggest the Multi-Tier version. It is free for 2
users. They have a really good generic ODBC client that will connect to
just about any database. These drivers are harder to get setup than the
Merant equivalent, but their support will actually help you get installed
and running. Please be aware that Epicor support will not help you at all
in using the Open Link ODBC drivers.

I'm using it on a test server. Personally I like 3.5 better. It is more
stable than the 3.6. The only bad thing about any Merant driver is the
frequency that they crash the OIB on the server. I've had great success
getting the Open Link driver running with Progress. It takes more time to
setup but doesn't crash hardly at all.

Troy,

We are using Merant ODBC 3.6 with version 5 over the Crystal Web
Server, so far no issues. The only problem we had with ODBC when we
went to 5.0 was with the new driver that came with the upgrade, which
was the Merant 3.6 SQL 92 V9.1A. We quickly changed back to the
standard 3.6 driver.

It was interesting however to try to deal with Merant during the
change over. Our company had purchased the service contract shortly
after determining that we were using the ODBC driver, back on Version
4.0 and ODBC 3.5. However, after going to 5.0 and installing the new
Merant SQL 92 V9.1A driver we discovered Merant support would no
longer help us because it wasn't a supported configuration. Progress
appearently customized this driver to work better with their DB so
all support would have to come from them. Vantage support told me
that other people were having problems with the upgrade and going
back to the previous driver was working. During that process I again
called Merant support for some help, this time I was having problems
setting up the ODBC on the server. They could still not help me
because it was not a supported configuration. We promptly cancelled
our support agreement with them as they wouldn't help us anymore.

So if any of you purchased support with Merant, be prepared to not
get any help when you upgrade to 5.0. Also be prepared to revert
back to the original version of 3.6, not the one that comes with the
5.0 upgrade. Things seem to be going well though. We went live May
1 with no major hiccups so far.

I spoke with Vantage tech support about this issue yesterday. They had me
install the SQL 92 version because it runs with the Progress Explorer, which
they deem to be the preferred method of managing the database. What issues
did you have with the SQL 92 version? They also told be that I should not be
running Crystal 8.5 because of some strange problems that 3 or 4 customers
have reported. I also asked about the web server component. They instructed
me to hold off because it was not supported by them. What version of Crystal
are you running? Anything to watch out for setting up the web server?

So far on the test 5.0 database, I have Merant 3.5 set up because I didn't know about 3.6. One huge Crystal Report (I'm on 8.5 by the way), that took hours on Vantage 3.0 with Merant 3.5 takes just a few minutes now, and can do it without all the subreports.

I'd be curious to try 3.6. Can anyone point me to the proper documentation to get Crystal to see Progress 9.1B through Merant 3.6?

Also, with 3.6 being "built in" so to speak, can I run a machine with both 3.5 (to run version 3 reports), AND 3.6 (to run Version 5 reports)? I know this couldn't be done on version 4 because of environment variables that needed to be changed.

Dan,

It's been a few months since I've dealt with this so some of the
details are kind of fuzzy, but one of the big differences was the
fact that the new ODBC driver required a login and password to be
entered when running ODBC reports where the old one lets you enter
through it without a password. However inconvenient that might be on
standard crystal reports I could live with it, however, we had
already modified a few of the Crystal Forms that vantage supplies
with ODBC involved, and the login process wasn't working when trying
to print those forms from within Vantage.

We are using Crystal Version 8. I hesitate to go to 8.5 because of
the change they made to the Crystal Web Server. It is now called
Crystal Enterprise and they've become strict about the number of
users that can be viewing reports at a time. The limit is 5 and the
additional licenses was outrageous. The web server works slick most
of the time. I ocaissionally run across a quirk but it usually gets
resolved pretty quickly with help from Crystal Support. I love it as
a method of distributing reports. I create a "Favorite" aimed at a
particular rpt file. I can change the rpt as often as I need to and
not need to do anything to the workstations. The Favorite brings up
the report in its altered state, no re-distribution necessary.

As far as setting up the web server, I had the help of our local
network support, but it all went smoothly. He installed the
Microsoft Web Server software, the Crystal Web Server software, the
ODBC client, and I think it was ready to roll at that point.

I got Merant 3.6 running on a standalone server for Vantage 5.0. It does weird things (I'm using Crystal 8.5). I did run the ivpro15.reg for Crystal. I can do simple one or two table reports, but add a third (one which works with CR 8.5 and Merant 3.5) and I get the message: "CRYSTAL REPORTS: DATABASE ERROR -- ODBC error: [Merant][ODBC PROGRESS driver][PROGRESS]Syntax error (7587)"
Then after you click OK, it says. "Error detected by database dll".

all support would have to come from them.

The IVPRO15 patch will address the "Unable to understand after DECLARE"
error with Crystal Reports. This will only work for the Merant v3.6
driver.

Recently there was talk of problems with ODBC 3.6 and version 5.0. Do
those
problems still exist or did the IVpro15 patch correct the problems?

Could you tell more about this Open Link driver. What are the costs? Where
did you get it? Are there setup instructions available?

The other bad thing about 3.5 is that you have to buy licenses at $100 bucks a crack.
