ODBC Driver for Progress that can Write to a Progre ss database

I wouldn't recommend it, but yes you can. I've done it in a test
environment. Make sure you tune your memory so that your server doesn't
crash.

Jim & Ted,
Are you able to have the Merant drivers AND the OpenLink drivers
installed at the same time (so that OpenLink can be evaluated w/o
interrupting current reports)?

I agree with Ted's assessment of the OpenLink drivers. I have been using
them with my Crystal Enterprise web report system for about 6 months. They
are rock solid and perform great. In fact, I see very little difference in
performance between native RB and equivalent ODBC/Crystal reports. On
the
downside, I does take a bit of effort on the server side to configure
properly and optimize to your environment, but the rewards are worth the
trouble and support is very good. I am currently using the "evaluation"
model with the 2 free client licenses. This allows you to actually have 4
concurrent connections to the Vantage/Progress database. Eventually, as I
add more reports to my Crystal Enterprise installation, I will need to
purchase client licenses, but for now I can live with the occasional
"exceeded max connections" error.

I've used the OpenLink drivers for years now. As with everything there
are
pro's and con's. Some of the cool features of the OpenLink drivers are
the
fact that they use a generic ODBC client to connect to their server
product.
This makes it easy, because it doesn't matter if you connect to a
Progress
database; Oracle or whatever, you only have one client that needs to be
maintained. The drivers are extremely fast. They have an offer where
you
can use the server product with 2 clients for free. This is ideal for
intranet type applications. As a matter of policy, they will always
sell
you their software cheaper than Merant. They also have excellent
support
and they really do know the in's and out's of using a Progress database.
If
your needs dictate, they also have JDBC & UDBC clients for using a
Progress
database and they have a generic ODBC client for Linux and UNIX. On the
flip side, the server drivers are difficult to install and Epicor
doesn't

properly.

In Merant's behalf, they have greatly improved their ODBC drivers in the
last 2 years.

Jeremy,

You can write to the Progress database after doing a standard Vantage client
install on 5.1 (not sure about 5.0, but 4.0 is a definite no). No need to
buy an ODBC driver from somebody else - you already have a fully functional
(read and write) driver for free.

drivers.

The site is www.Openlink.com.

Their products allow you to read and write to Progress Databases.
Their compatabilty listing doesn't list 9.1C yet but I spoke to a rep
and they do support it. The site just hasn't been updated.

We use SQL Server and if my testing today keeps going as good as it
has we may go back to the Progress Database.

I hope this helps someone.

Thats cool.
We went to SQL Server at the same time we went to 5.0.
If I had known that the native progress odbc drivers could be used to write
to the database we would have never went with SQL Server.
Thanks for the info.

Jeremy,

You can write to the Progress database after doing a standard Vantage client
install on 5.1 (not sure about 5.0, but 4.0 is a definite no). No need to
buy an ODBC driver from somebody else - you already have a fully functional
(read and write) driver for free.

I came accross a company today on the web that has some great ODBC
drivers.

The site is www.Openlink.com.

and they do support it. The site just hasn't been updated.
