ODBC calls from an IIS web server [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

Does the Progress license let you install it on another Server?

Paul,
So to be clear... You use the Vantage CD to install Progress on the Web
Server computer? Do you use the default settings... are there any changes
from a typical server install?

Also, what exactly does doing this help resolve with Crystal Web Component?
Is it mainly ADO connections that are the problem?

Chris,

I think I have found a solution that doesn't force you to change the
security settings. By installing a local copy of Progress on the web
server rather than using the progress network client I've got our IIS
web reports working fine using the default anonymous access settings.

Paul.

We are in the process of setting up an internal web server (IIS runing ASP
scripts) to run simple web reports from our Vantage database. This is a
technology we have used extensively in the past for producing simple
end-user information from databases however I've run into a problem... When
I try to create an ADODB connection to Vantage from an ASP script I get this
error:

"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 5 (MERANT 3.60
32-BIT Progress SQL92 v9.1D). "

I know that the ODBC drivers are working on the server as I have tested the
connections with both Visual Basic code and VB Script (using the Windows
Scripting Host), in both cases the ADODB connections work correctly.

I believe that system error 5 indicates that the server's IUSR account
doesn't have
the correct permissions on certain files to be able to launch the driver?
Can anyone point me in the direction of the security permissions that need
changing to get this to work?

Paul,

I have a workaround, but I'm still searching for a good solution to this
problem. The only way I've been able to get it to work (after many hours of
head pounding), is to create an administrator account (try yours for
starters) and use that for the Directory Security account for Anonymous
access. That doesn't even quite do it. The account you create has to be
logged on locally to the IIS server before the connection will work. I just
lock the screen on that computer. It is a permissions issue. I believe an
administrator has to be logged on to get access to a database on another
server (at least for Progress).

Hope this helps, and if you find a better way, please let me know.

Great news, Paul!!! I'll definitely have to give that a try. Now, let's
see... When can I take the server down again? :)

Yes, I installed Progress from the Vantage CD, just installing the Client
Networking part and leaving everything else at defaults.

This is to get around problems when calling the Merant ODBC driver from asp
code on the web server, we aren't using the crystal web component at all as
it wasn't ideal for what we wanted to achieve and we've been using in-house
written asp reports for many years so it is a technology we know well.

Paul.
