O.T. network Switch replacement / wireless network

We will implementing a transition this year to Gb network speed. I plan
on using a Cisco for my main switch (4 Incoming Fiber Connections), and
Dells on the nodes. I am really trying to beef up our security on the
front end, hence the Cisco placement.

I was in the same position that you are with the 10/100 switch's. My
problem was that I only had one or two of my 3com switches go out and
the
transceivers were 10/100. I opted to replace all of my switches with
new
Dell's and gig transceivers. The transition was easy and it gave me
more
visibility with my users. I didn't have to replace any CAT5 wiring,
just
the fiber-optic jumpers coming into the transceivers.

Sorry for the off topic post. My 10/100 network switch died over the
long weekend. Existing wiring is Cat5 and fiber optic in plant area due
to EMI noise. I do not think the old Cat5 will support a faster switch.
Replacing the switch also involves buying new 10/100 fiber optic
transceivers (according to 3Com). The boss is asking about wireless,
instead of fiber optic. I am not certain about range, noise
interference, bandwidth, and network security, and tried to discourage
him. Anybody with wireless experience? Does it effect Vantage
performance?

Thanks,

I agree with the speed limitation. There is also a ton security
breaches to be concerned with locking down too.

You might check to see if you're cabled for CAT5e EIA-568B. CAT5e is rated
to 1000BaseT.

Last week had 3, 24 port Cisco Catalyst 3500's fail within minutes of each
other. All went into service at the same time 6 plus years ago. I replaced
ALL my switches in the main rack with a single Cisco 4206 with 3, 48 port
gigabit line cards (blades).
The workstations already had 10/100/1000 triple speed autosensing NIC's and
the CAT5e cabling is rated for the same. So other than the initial cost of
the chassis and blades the infrastructure upgrade painless.

We run Cisco Aironet 1100's in 6 conference rooms and 3 production floors.
Security is simple... you only have access to the WAP after we add the MAC
address of the device requesting to the MAC Address Authentication list(s)
-- setup is quick and gives us a chance to let the users (customers,
supervisors, etc) know that usage is monitored and abuse will not be
tolerated.

We're schedule to complete our migration from v6.1 to v8 by September of
2006 with 34 full user licenses and 55 data collection.

I prioritized the V8 hardware requirements as follows:
Network infrastructure
Server
Workstations

'The how many of the fastest processors wont mean squat if you don't have
the infrastructure!' imho

Once again I've gone over my $.02 worth ;)
