O/T AV Software

As usual, Aaron provides excellent advice. It is always wise to have multiple
layers of security - A/V as well as firewall, etc.

What good is setting up a strong gateway if a user places an unsecured
wireless access point on your LAN? Or a sales rep brings in a laptop from the
field and connects to your LAN? Or a user plugs in a USB drive that contains
malware? There are so many vectors of attack these days, one really must plan
for the eventuality that at least one of your defenses will be compromised.

We have Trend Micro.
I've used McAfee and Symantec/NAV for years and I must say I'm really happy with Trend.

Just wondering what everyone is using for A/V software. We are a
company of about 60 computers and are currently using Symantec.
However it time to renew and I was looking around. Dose anyone know
anything about Kaspersky? I've been looking at them, they seem to
have a really nice suite with good central controls.

Thanks,

Norman

I use NOD32 by ESET at the kids' school. It has a VERY small footprint -
especially compared to Symantec and it seems to always catch zero-day
exploits. Even so, they update as needed and not just once a week. The
centralized management lets you push installations and it keeps track of
unprotected computers. Runs on Linux too.

I use Symantec Corporate Edition. I have had no viruses get through but I
want to get a AV that has a smaller footprint on the OS. Symantec Corp Ed
does push updates out to the computers as needed, I have the main server
that runs the control console check for updates every night.

I too will be looking for a new AV this year when my licenses run out. I
have looked at NOD32 before and I am leaning that way except it still is
more cost effective to just renew the current licenses I have.

We are using AVG Network Edition. While I must say, installed on an
individual computer AVG is flawless but installed and controlled from
a central point, it's not very good. Symantec Corp. Edition is very
good at this, light years ahead of AVG in central administration. I
will be checking out other suites for this main issue when our AVG is
up next December.

We have been using Trend Micro for about two years now. Nothing has
managed to infect durring that time. It has caught the few that have
made it past the mail filter as they have been opened by the client.
That brings to point my most significant recommendation to anyone who
manages a network of computer.
Layer your antivirus defenses.
I happen to prefer to layer with various vendors as well (eggs in
separate baskets). We have one product on our mail server rejecting
mail that contains infections it is aware of (updating hourly), a second
layer that removes the most obviously dangerous attachments and flags
the questionable ones (by attachment extension), and the third layer
that protects desktop and server file systems using the TrendMicro
product. I find their product very cost effective and easy to manage as
well as effective against infection. I purchased the product nearly two
years ago to replace Symantec based on a survey of this group at that time.
Good luck,

Just a nod to say we use eTrust Antivirus from Computer Associates.

We've had 2 viruses get thru the filtering and when it came to remove them, they were
those annoying ones which re-enabled themselves after removing. The AV was just
chasing them around the system and it took about 3 different AV/Anti-spyware programs
to remove them entirely.

Not sure what their latest product is like but I won't be going with CA again.

We are a company of about 40 PCs. We recently changed from CA Etrust
to NOD32. I am extremely pleased so far. I had one workstation that
CA would not clean (said it was but the infection would be there
again on reboot). The very first pass of Nod32 (even before signature
updates) cleaned it totally. NOD32 is easy to configure and updates
are supplied often - several times a day in fact.

My two cents.

Highly recommend TrendMicro ;

1. Low impact, does not consume insurmountable system
resources

2. Emailed reports easy to setup and distribute

3. Easy to install & Manage from central location

4. Great Techsupport

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL (us): We switched from Symantec to Trend last
summer. What a great experience. We had a virus that got by Symantec.
Symantec tech informed me that I would have to rebuild the server. I
called Trend, they sent a fix, and it worked. That was in April. I
told them when it came time to renew, I would go with them. They
offered a price that was right on par compared to what it would had
been to renew with Symantec.

Another major fan of NOD32 here.
Everything people have said in previous emails about NOD32 I agree with.
Worth every penny.

Bruce, which type of Trend MIcro are you running....SMB or Enterprise? I just got a quote on renewing Symantec and also for "competitive upgrade" to Trend Micro's SMB version and Trend is 1/2 the cost of renewing Symantec. I'm not clear yet if there is a feature set difference between SMB and Enterprise or just the number of users. If Enterprise is better, even if that raises it to even with renewing, I would probably opt for that.

Thanks,

It is SMB we are using which includes Exchange email coverage. It was
less, but if I remember correctly we needed to purchase in blocks of 10,
which was the difference.
