Judy,

Thx, You would think this would be listed in the upgrade documents
somewhere.

The Change Log Maintenance is now located in Utilities - Business Activity
Manager. You have to custom design the fields you want tracked for each
Table. It takes a while but gets rid of a lot of the unnecessary logging.
As I recall, Epicor suggests that you NOT be arbitrary and select every
field...that you give it some thought.

I'm new to Epicor and Vantage and in the process of evaluating an upgrade
from Vantage 5.2 to 6.1. Here are my questions:

1) I understand 6.1 has been out for about a year. How stable is this
version?
2) How reliable are Epicor's testing/QA procedures? How much testing will I
need to do to insure 6.1 works well at my site?

Thanks,

I think Epicor has done their best job ever with 6.1. We have had no problems with it for the last 6 months.
Thanks

From 5.2 to 6.1 I would not think "testing" is as much of an issue as user preparation. Especially with 6.1 where font changes on the screens and personalization options can throw people for a few days. Better to expose them before hand. 6.1 has been very stable for us. A lot of effort has gone into 6.1 to make it the best jumping off point for migration to 8.0. Sometimes at the expense of attnention to the earlier versions. Even now more attention, as far as patches, is given to 6.1 so should there be a problem it would get fixed there faster. If a problem in an earlier version is found but does not exist in later versions you would probably get the reponse that you must upgrade in order to fix it.

Candy,

As good policy for any update of Vantage and recommended by Epicor:

1. Install the new version in a test server - 5.2 and 6.1 can co-exist
because they use the same progress 9.1D. I prefer a separate server.
2. Create groups to evaluate different aspects of the software
(accounting, production, etc.) These groups have the opportunity to
familiarize with the software and be able to train others if needed. Through
testing the software, these groups can point issues like screens
differences, reports, etc that will minimize the impact when starting to use
6.1 live (the endless calls that my "stuff" is not where it supposed to be
or my reports do not work, blah, blah, blah!!!).

You will have a headache that day, or the next day for sure. Just have
plenty of Aspirin. Good luck.

We upgraded on September 11 of this year. We have just gotten most of the
kinks worked out of it. Global alerts are a trip and nobody at Vantage
support knows Jack about it. Finally have it working. The fonts out of the
box are crap and you have to change that. Searching to select a job on the
production detail report is slow as christmas....like a third grader
programed the search. Several of the standard accounting reports are set to
a non functional crystal report and you have to change those back to the
progress report. Lots of small got ya things that I cant remember.
Basically get ready for some work keeping users happy after you upgrade.
Epicor will not provide you a list of known bugs, so it's upgrade at your
own risk.

BTW, we upgraded to a new server that is about 10000000000000 billion times
faster than our old one and Vantage 6.1 isn't that much faster on it than
5.2 was on the old PIII 500Mhz, so look to Gigabit network if you want it to
fly.

Candy,

We upgraded on September 19 to 6.1 from 5.2. We set up the test for
6.1 on the same server as our 5.2 and had nothing but problems with
our 5.2 until we shut off the test. Be aware if you use the same
server, the report builder reports will not work correctly until you
change the Parameter file within progress. Both 6.1 and 5.2 use it
and it can not be changed until you go live with 6.1 as it will
screw up 5.2 on the same server. My suggestion if you can upgrade
on a completely separate server. As for it being faster... we're
running a 3 gig server and it's still slow. Also, once you have
upgraded, if you use the change logs, go in to 6.1 and make sure
they are still there. Our's were not and we did not know until 3
days into the new system. Not a good time to realize you can't
track anything.

Best of luck to you.
Shari
Shari,

Where is "Change Log Maintenance" located under 6.1?
I don't' see it under "System Management" / "Utilities" like in 5.2.
Did it get a new name?

Yes, it's now called Business Activiy Manager.
