New to Epicor, question on XL Connect

SSRS is a really solid tool. Once you get familiar with it the stuff you are able to do its way more robust than what you could do with crystal or any other tool. However you do need to get somebody well trained on SSRS and on SQL. I personally don't think getting trained on it is hard. At least some of the customers we have trained on it seem to be very happy with the tool itself. But I could be wrong. However, whatever you do, do not get AFR!

Hi All, We are still in the implementation phase, learning all about DMT's, BAQ's and all that Jazz. I have a question though on the XL Connect software. As we are a small company and I am the IT department, we do not have anyone in house that knows SSRS or XL Connect for that matter, but the consultants managing our implementation said that XL Connect can be used to generate reports and is much easier to learn and use than SSRS. So we are considering using it as our reporting tool, and Epicor has told us we need to purchase XL Connect AND XL Connect Developer. Can anyone confirm that this is the case and why just XL Connect Developer won't do the job, and opinions on the ease of using XL connect rather than learning SSRS?

XL Connect is easy(ish) to use but it can not replace a reporting tool without having someone in house that knows how to write SSRS (that's where XL Connect gets its data from) and XL Development. XL Connect is a great tool for finances and for getting data out of the system. But without a developer in house it is no better at reporting than SSRS or Crystal.

I agree with what Jose had to say and as a side note, XL Connect has several “canned” financial reports that you can modify to meet your needs without having to develop them from scratch.  XL Connect Developer is for other data you  want to report on that may or may not be financial data.

We had nothing but problems and complaints with XLConnect.  Each person who used it here needed a developer license to do anything meaningful.  Our accounting department bought some other software they were comfortable with that appears to be a more robust product.  As far as reporting, I recommend either learning SSRS or hiring someone to do this.
