New Server

Jim:

You must install Vantage on the server. Copying the files over will not update the Registry.

I assume you're on 4.0 now. I'd: install 4.0 on the new server; copy the .db & b1 files; install patches; run schema; and you'll proboably need to reload all license codes; finally run database conversions.

You may also need to change you server to be the primary domain controller and swith the cable from your old server to the new server and vice-versa.

Also, Foster, Virginia, Burt and Ben all are very good resorces at Epicor support! (1800-269-3044)

Good luck.

We are replacing our server and are looking at Dell 1400SC 933MHZ. I
would appreciate any comments on Dell performance if anyone has used
them as a server. We are looking at converting to V5.0 in Sept.
From what our consultant guy (MCSE / CISCO / A+, and everything else
certified) says, Dell and Compaq compete for the best workstations,
although he prefers the Compaq Servers.

We have been running Compaq servers for close to ten years, and they have
been very reliable. Compaq support is excellent. Of course, Dell's is
pretty decent as well.

On the workstations side, we switched to Gateways, and got on their 2 year
refresh program, which works great for us.

When it comes to servers, performance is a matter of the hardware you get,
not the name on the case. One thing some admins do is look at the name
brand servers, see what hardware they are using, and go out and piece
together their own server. You get the same performance, at a cheaper
price. Factor in the time your company pays you to piece those parts
together, and the price is about the same.

What really matters is support. When the server is down, you need a
manufacturer who will stand behind their product, and four years down the
road be able to take your serial number, and still know exactly what machine
you're running, what the issues are, and how to fix them.

We have a Compaq Proliant ML370 933 Mhz with a drive array running RAID
(cant remember which) All I can say is the thing screams.

Just my $.02

We've got a Dell PowerEdge 4300 and like it a lot. It has dual 550 Mhz
P3's, 512 MB ram, 4 hot-swappable 10,000 RPM 20 gig SCSI dirves (with a Perc
2 RAID controller with 64 MB of memory), and handles 36 Vantage 5.0 users
without a hiccup.

Actually, we just bought a 1400SC to use as a file server for our branch
office. Nice machine.

We currently have 2 Dell Poweredge 2200's, and two 1300's. Our Vantage
server is a 2400 with dual 666 processors. Never had a problem with any of
them save replacing a motherboard in the 2200 because there was no power to
one of the CPU fans.

For what its worth, the first server we bought (to my recollection) is a
Compaq Proliant 500, with a Pentium Pro 150. It still soldiers on as our
print server.

I like Dell over Compaq because I found Dell machines are easier to get
designed to our specifications. I also like dealing with Dell directly.

Good point. Come to think of it, the excellent support we got was from a
local Compaq authorized vendor, not Compaq itself.

Sounds like the Dell is a good bet

For what its worth, we decided to go with the Gateway ALR server and
Gateway work stations in July 1999. We have had great luck with them
and pretty good customer support from Gateway. We also liked to
customize each computer to be outfitted to our added specifications.

Someone mentioned something about a program that would help me decide what
server I needed for Vantage. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking
about: :-)

We ordered a new server 10 weeks ago from Compaq and we still have
not received it. They are telling us that the memory is the hold-
up. Has anyone else had this problem with Compaq? I ordered a new
server from Dell for our church. It arrived within a week. Is there
much difference between Dell and Compaq as far as quality and price?
Should we cancel the Compaq and order a Dell? Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.
I'd cancel the Compaq server and go for the dell

Get one of their new rack mounted units if you can afford it
They are sweet

We've been using compaqs and they've been very reliable for us. However,
DELL's are sweet too. I would have no qualms about buying a dell instead of
a compaq.

You might consider going through CDW or another authorized Compaq reseller,
to see if they have the model you're looking for in stock.
