New poll for vantage

The Vista and Vantage code prior to version 6 is completely different. The
Vista 4.x and below users would have no benefit from this list until they
were ready to migrate to 6, or 8 which is scheduled for general release 7/1.
V6 or V8 users would have a definite benefit to participation since it is
the same code base with some features removed (G/L Divisions,
multi-warehouses, projects, etc).

As far as I am aware, before V8 the Vista and Vantage
code is completely different.

As such I would prefer to keep Vista separate.

But then I'd rather have a separate group for V8
anyway so what do I know...

Whether we vote to invite Vista Members or not I think
the Version number in

Before I vote can someone educate me?

Is the current version of Vista the same basic code-base as Vantage - only with a different set of screens and security levels?
Right or wrong - Vista is now sort of "Vantage Lite" and runs on Progress 9.1d?
Vista will have a parallel migration to the equivalent of Vantage 8.0 (on Progress 10 / Open-Edge, etc...)?

If there is enough similarity between the underlaying technologies I could put up with UI and functionality specific Vista posts - especially if the subject had [Vista] or similar for filtering. But if there are no posts pertaining to Vista (due to totally different tech) that would also apply to Vantage usage I would think they should be seperate mail lists.

There are large differences between Vista Classic and the current flavor of
Vista. There are two Vista groups, with about 280 members. One group is
very small only 38 members. Also keep in mind they might like their group
and not want to be absorbed.

I was always under the impression that Vista was Vantage but with fewer

As the moderators of the Vista list, perhaps we can shed some light on some
of your questions. Vista 6 is identical code to Vantage 6 with the
exception of some of the splash screens and help files. In fact, if you
open many of the Vista configuration files, you will still see references to
Vantage variables. Some of the features of Vantage have been disabled but
all-in-all it is the same product.

That being said, the Vista community did not make a wholesale adoption of
version 6 so there are relatively few users. Version 4 of Vista is a
completely different product built from Visual FoxPro with a completely
different schema. The only interesting and even remotely relevant feature
of Vista 4x to Vantage users is that Vista 4 can be customized/personalized
in much the same manner as Vantage 8. Many Vista users chose not to
"upgrade" to version 6 and chose rather to wait for version 8 simply because
they did not want to give up the ability to customize the system. No sense
going back to the future as it were.

Finally, we should note that the Vista list is far less active than the
Vantage list owing to a combination of factors but primarily that Vista
users in general have fewer resources to commit to the product than Vantage
users. I know that fact is of little solace to those of you who are already
resource constrained but, believe me, it does get worse.

We're all in favor of the idea of a communal resource but the main problems
are:

1. The majority of users of both products are on dissimilar versions with
little to share between them.
2. Vista users, in general, have little time to commit to listservs.

What we have chosen to do, as a compromise, is to strongly recommend that
users of Vista 6x and above join the Vantage list and, owing to the general
tone of this thread we would assume that they would be welcome. In the
meantime, however, unless someone in this group has a burning desire to
brush up on the intricacies of Visual FoxPro, you're probably better off to
have the two lists separate.

Before I vote can someone educate me?

Is the current version of Vista the same basic code-base as Vantage - only
with a different set of screens and security levels?
Right or wrong - Vista is now sort of "Vantage Lite" and runs on Progress
9.1d?
Vista will have a parallel migration to the equivalent of Vantage 8.0 (on
Progress 10 / Open-Edge, etc...)?

If there is enough similarity between the underlaying technologies I could
put up with UI and functionality specific Vista posts - especially if the
subject had [Vista] or similar for filtering. But if there are no posts
pertaining to Vista (due to totally different tech) that would also apply to
Vantage usage I would think they should be seperate mail lists.

Jasper, Todd and Chris,

As far as I know, Todd is dead-on in his assessment of Vista 6.x as "Vantage
Lite": very similar functionality running on the same Progress platform. My
understanding is that certain functionality included in the Vantage "core"
is only available to Vista users as a separate purchase. One example would
be the projects functionality available in the Job Management module in
Vantage. I believe this is not included with Vista. Please note that this
only applies to 6.x versions of Vista. Also note that there is apparently
NO Vista 8.0 in the works at this time. Whether that means that Vista users
must wait for a "parallel migration" path to Vista 8 or that they must
eventually be assimilated (is resistance futile?) into our Vantage
collective, I do not know.

Interestingly enough, just today I spoke to a prospective Vista user who
clearly indicated that a local user group would be highly valuable to her.
I find it hard to believe that she would not consider a online user group
such as ours to be just as valuable.

As far as I am aware, before V8 the Vista and Vantage
code is completely different.

As such I would prefer to keep Vista separate.

But then I'd rather have a separate group for V8
anyway so what do I know...

Gavin,
I believe you will find the code is very similar as of 6.X, not 8.0. There
was a frustrated thread several months back when Epicor made a little slip
and with Vantage Codes entered, the menu item under view showed "Vista Menu"
instead of "Vantage Menu". If I am not mistaken, as of 6.X Vista is more or
less a subset of Vantage. I know I just talked to my CAM about a Vista ->
Vantage change over customer and we discussed how they are similar but the
customer was looking to learn a little about the additional modules
available in Vantage.
I can't swear to what I have stated, but I believe it to be true.

As far as I am aware, before V8 the Vista and Vantage
code is completely different.

As such I would prefer to keep Vista separate.

But then I'd rather have a separate group for V8
anyway so what do I know...

Whether we vote to invite Vista Members or not I think

I never hurts to have more options for support but I'm

I just remember that when I first started using Vantage, I went to the week
long course in Boston. I felt like I got the short end of the stick because
the class was a class full of Vista users and the person that was directing
the class came over to me when we would hit something that was different in
Vantage. It would be something that I had in Vantage that they would not
have in Vista. It seemed to me that everything was pretty much the same
minus a few accessories.
