Why not put the old part number information into the new part number's
description? That way the "it's worked like that for years" folks could do
a quick search for the part using the search field "part description
contains" and entering the old part number.

We are implementing 6.10 and have created a new part numbering
schema that defines the parts into part families and sub groups. We
would like an easy way to document the old part number in case there
is a need to find something quickly. (The new schema was designed
so this isn't necessary, but I need to have this feature as a backup
so the "it's worked like that for years" folks would by in.)

My initial idea was to create a memo for each part with the
appropriate old part number. We did the same with our customer and
vendor numbers without any problems, but we are much more likely to
use other memos with the parts. It would be nice to have the Memo
Button only changed to indicate a note if it was one of these
special notes. (With the original plan, all parts would indicate a
memo and the Memo Button would be more likely to be ignored.)

Another suggestion is to use the Substitutes feature and add all the
old numbers to the system. Ideally, the old parts would be set
to "inactive", but that removes them from the Substitues list.
Another option would be to put the old parts on Hold, but they will
continue to show up in the parts list (doubling the list).

A third idea would be use to use the VB Forms to capture the info.

I think I would opt for VB Form field and with 6.1 Customization capability place the field directly on the main Part screen. Also, because the VB form fields are supposedly immune to trigger issues I might feel comfortable writing to it (via ODBC?) from some other application (MS-Access?) to populate it.

Another thought might be to put it at the end of the part description field inside something like square brackets which would make it easy enough to extract with string functions or to inhibit printing on things like invoices. Then the search description part of lookups might be of use.

Do you have a lot of P/Ns that need to be changed?
The reason I am asking is that we have a lot of problem with generating
wrong P/N's and making them inactive and so on.
Finally I contacted Epicor Custom programming dept. on getting a custom
program that changes the old P/N with a new one. They are working on the
quote as of now. It's possible to do for sure. We chose to change one P/N at
a time, instead of a batch process.
This approach may help you too.

We put the old part numbers in the "search field". The search field
defaults to the begining of the description anyway so we wern't gaining
anything by leaving the description there. Now we have an option of
searching be part number (new), descrpition, and the search field which is
the old part number. Even if the entire part number does not fit, it gets
them close enough to scroll and find the correct part.
