Patrick,
My operating system is on one set of mirrored drives
the Vantage is on the other set.
I left the Vantage DB and .bi files together..guess I'm chicken.
I still need to work on performance, but I thought it was better.
Though it is agreed by me & support I need to up my memory to 1GB from 512
MB.

OK, has anyone placed the different .d? files on different drives for
performance?
Did you place the corresponding .bi file on a different pair?

Patrick,
It doesn't take as much time as you think it would. I did it on my 600+MB
data base. I didn't write down the time on each of the procedures but I
don't think the actual processing times were more then a hour all together.
I spent more time doing the dump and load, backing up, and practicing the
conversion. My advice is practice the conversion, if at all possible, &/or
do it when support is available (I had a little trouble with the
directions).
Hope this helps - a little

Let me clarify what I'm looking for.

I'm on version 5.0, my database is multivolume.

All of my data is in one 1.5gb .d1 file.

Anyone define more storage areas (.d1 files)

If so how many, how long did it take, did you do a dump & load before or
after, did you reindex afterwards?

Any things to watch out for such as the original 1.5gb .d1 file space is not
given back to the disk drive.

Patrick,

We did this when we upgraded to v5. We went from 3 to 5,
and ended up with about a 1.6 GB Database. After talking
with Vantage support, there is a way to restore your database
into your new structure. The basics are that you create a
vantage.st file that has the extents that you want (d1, d2, d3, etc)
, backup your DB (TWICE) ,move your existing DB files out of the db
directory (this way you have the originals just in case), put your
new ST file in the DB Directory, and restore. Progress will automatically
create the new structure from the ST file, and you'll be all set.
The restore took about 20-25 minutes, including creating the new db
structure.

I talked with Jay Erickson at Vantage support about this, and he was
very knowledgable about doing this, and even sent me a new ST file.

**This happened to me on my first attempt.
By creating a new structure you should be able to get this divided up into
more volumns.
http://support.epicor.com/vantage/support/techupdate/topmvdbmaint.asp
See this directions. They helped me, but not completly.
Their structure was somthing like this..but it didn't match my blocking
factor. And I didn't want volumns that large.
d "Schema Area":6,32 c:\newdb\vantage.d1 f 409600
d "Schema Area":6,32 c:\newdb\vantage.d2 f 409600
d "Schema Area":6,32 c:\newdb\vantage.d3 f 409600

So I used a structure like this....
#
b e:\epic50\vantage\db\
#
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\ f 204800
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\ f 204800
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\ f 204800
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\ f 204800
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\ f 204800
d "Schema Area":6,64 e:\epic50\vantage\db\

If so how many, how long did it take, did you do a dump & load before or
after, did you reindex afterwards?
**I did the Dump and load before with version 4. Then did the Multiple
volumns when
Version 5 was completely ready. Like I said the actual processing wasn't
that long.
Getting ready and practicing took the time.

Any things to watch out for such as the original 1.5gb .d1 file space is not
given back to the disk drive.
**I got my space back from my first attempt at a multi volumn when I got it
copied to the new structure and deleted the old.
Just make sure you have enough room for all your volumns. Once they are
there they take the disk space. The last volumn I set to not be a fixed
block, then you know when this starts growing you have to do something about
your structure. It's kind of an overflow.
****Biggest help..was working with support.

It was hard to tell if we did or not. When we
first upgraded to 5, our performance was horrible.
We ended up doing a dump and load of our DB, and then
did the structure change at the same time. Performance
was better than before the dump and load, but that probably
had more to do with the dump and load than with the
structure change. Since then, we've put in a new server,
and things have been great.

There was no change to the backup procedure (using backvan, etc).
Our DB has 5 extents, 1st 4 are 512 MB, and the 5th is variable,
and can be up to 2 GB. I'll probably add more extents
when I see the variable length one start to grow.

Hope this helps.

Patrick,

We've had our .bi on a separate drive since we migrated to Vantage 4. Works
just fine. Supposedly gives increased performance but that's hard to verify
since we changed versions of the software at the same time.

Performance of Progress in general is remarkable. I've worked is shops that
were exclusively MS SQL Server and other client-server databases and
Progress is much more reliable and much faster than the others even when the
company has paid consultants to tune the database and the queries. Okay,
I'll get off my soapbox now.

You might want to check out Progress Software's knowledge base for related
articles.
