MultiPart Forms

Steve,

We were using the same technique with Win-95/98 clients - we would simply
install a second reference to the same network printers using the HP-2
drivers. The first might say "HP4 - Standard" while the second would say
"HP4 - Vantage" - both actually pointing at the same network printer.

Have you figured out how to do this with a W2K client ? So far I have been
too stupid to grasp what should be easy to do ... What's the trick ?

Tom,

We have had some luck with the following general technique; perhaps it will
work with what you need.

Every Vantage user in the company has a printer specifically named "HP

What we noticed was that in Crystal Reports, if we changed the print driver
in the Report Designer to "HP Laserjet for Vantage" then all of the settings
would carry over to the workstation as long as they had a printer with the

or not but its worth a try.

Good luck!

printer,(without clicking 4 copies in the dialog box) in fact some
programs
will allow you to send each part to a different printer. Imagine that!

We are using vantage 4.0, and would like to use Crystal for our invoices,
po's etc.. and send to laser printer. However, we need multipl copies.
Does anybody have a solution for printing multipart forms without
selecting
number of copies and the print dialog box?

Thanks

How do you plan on printing a multi-part form in a laser printer? The only

I believe you can setup most HP printers to print more than one copy by
default.
My HP4050N I just set to 4 and it worked.

There is multi-part paper available for lasers. Have see as many as
three copies it works on heat principal. Drawback is the paper is very
expensive. You could also setup the printer to print as many copies of
the form you want - most lasers have this capability.

Tom,
I think Wayne Cox had some ascii code that could be sent to the printer with a report that could tell it to print X number of copies each time. Or else he set that at the server so that it always prints X number of copies. You could check with him on the list, or look back at the archives.

Ahh, yet another thing that *should* be easy, but isn't. We print AP
checks to a dedicated printer on duplicate forms (I too have heard forms
vendors call them "2 part" -- bad choice of names, IMO)

Vantage and/or Crystal seem to always pull the printer options from the
default printer, rather than the one you selected. So if we set our print
preferences to 2 copies on the check printer, it ignores it and looks at
the default printer. You might try selecting the multi-copy printer as
windows' default and see if honors the number of copies setting. Chances
are though, 90% of your prints are destined for a plain-vanilla printer, so
then you'd have to change the properties on that one (arrgh!)

You can configure multiple copies at the printer, at least on all the HPs
I've messed with. But -- that doesn't work either. Windows still sends
its control codes, and overrides back to one copy.

The hack I came up is done in the printer's network interface. We use Axis
brand print server / NICs to plug the printer onto the 'net. They have a
string substitution feature that I use to modify the control string to
force two copies. The HP sequence is \e&l1X (esc ampersand lower-L digit-1
X) or 1B 26 6C 31 58 in hex. Stuff in 1B 26 6C 32 58 and it always prints
two copies. Dunno if the jet-directs or other adapters have this feature.

-Wayne Cox
I'd go low tech with this one.

Use the copy machine. Then at least whoever is making
the copies each time would ask themself..Why am I doing this??
Thanks for the input.

Tom
