Moving Vantage 6.1

We moved from 5.2 to 6.1 about a year and half ago. From what I
remember I did need to make the stop at 6.0 to pick up all of its schema
changes, and then perform the upgrades needed to get to 6.1. This was
in the course of one weekend.

I have one regret in this upgrade. That is I did not take the time to
investigate the added functionality in 6.0 and 6.1. Basically, I
treated the upgrade as no more than a complicated patch install. The
reason for this, was I was led to believe 6.0 & 6.1 where CRM releases
which we did not own. However, there was some other functionality added
(ECO, & Workflow) which was not properly investigated.

As for changing servers, plan time for visiting every client and
manually removing registry entries to get rid of Progress. Ask tech for

Don't call epicor support for advice on moving from 5.2 to 6.1. I'm in
the testing stage of making this migration myself and there are a lot of
items not covered by their documentation and when you call support, they
act like they've never heard of this problem before. This problem, being
the client entries in the registry. This is some of the responses I got
from support the last week when I was trying to migrate.

1. we don't support 5.2 to 6.1, you'll need to install 6.0 first
2. can you repeat that, I've never heard of this before (the client
registry entries)
3. the problem is with your computer.
4. you'll need to reinstall Vantage in order to make that work (all
I had to do was give everyone full permissions on mfgsys folder)

I know I'm bashing but its frustrating when you call for help and you
get these response especially with the money we pay for support.

I still can't believe they don't have a tool to remove the old client
from the registry without removing it manually.

Hi Brychan

Be careful with the client registry entries with 6.1. When you move
servers, this will create secondary registry entries for the new server
name. You will more than likely need to remove the entries with the old
server name on the clients. Without this, Vantage will still work, but
you may find certain screens very slow, as it could be looking for the
old server. You could try regclean, but it doesn't always remove them.

Subject: [Vantage] Moving Vantage 6.1

Hi,

I am planning to move Vantage 6.1 on to another server. At the
moment my plan is ;

1) Backup original install
2) Install Progress on new server
3) Patch Progress on new server
4) Install Vantage 6.1 on new server
5) Install Vantage Patches on new server
6) Create Databases in Progress Explorer
7) Restore Progress databases on new server using prorest.
8) Restore additional Files, such as custom crystal reports etc.
9) Test Vantage
10) Configure Process Server.

I am not sure if this correct. Also, how do I deal with the
licenses. Are these stored within the database? Do I need to restore
any other files?

The drive configuration on the new server will be the same. But the
server name will be different.

I also need to move the corvu application.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Somewhere along the way I completely missed this client registry thing. Maybe it was because I kept the old drive letter to the Epic52 folder for Progress and made a new one for the Epicor folder where mfgsys60 and mfgsys61 are. Maybe this was the reason I went that route - been so long I don't really remember. But I never had to touch the client registries or clean anything out. Just reinstalled the client (w/o the Progress part).

Nick,

You have a good idea on how to move the database. I am in the process to
move Vantage from my old network to a brand new one and the client
installation is an issue. I am fortunate to count with Citrix-Terminal
Server to point users in the new domain to the old one while I
re-install the clients.

If you have problems uninstalling Vantage 6.1 and Progress (not so much)
client, the best way is to clean the registry. Here is a way to clean
it:

1. Search for the word Manufacturing and delete all entries. If you
scroll down you can see entries for Progress as well. Delete them both.
I had some clients that went from 4.0 to 5.1 to 6.1 with the same
server. Delete all versions of progress.
2. Search for the name of the server and look at the entry. If it has
anything to do with Vantage or Progress, delete the entry.
3. Search for the word Merant (ODBC driver) entries and delete them all.

Verify with Add/Remove programs that Manufacturing and Progress are not
listed. Go to Admin Tools/ODBC drivers and make sure no merant drivers
or connections are available. If they are listed, search the registry by
the ODBC entries and delete them (i.e. mfgsys61, merant).

If you are lucky to uninstall Vantage and Progress without issue, then
search the registry for the name of the server and delete all entries
related to Vantage or Progress. Then, you will be ready to install the
client pointing to the new server.

Hope this helps. I have done this 8 times so far with XP-Pro's and
different brands and it is tedious. Good luck.
