Moving from 3.0 to 5.1

Eric,
Here are the ODBC51.zip file from Epicor. I'll also upload it to the Group.

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions for the folks who have done this.

We're going to make the big jump in two weeks. I'm setting up a test machine
right now for a trial run and to debug Progress and Crystal reports.

1) I currently use the Merant driver for ODBC access - how does the built-in
driver in 5.1 compare? Same thing?

2) There were a bunch of files uploaded detailing the changes in ODBC to the
Yahoo groups but my account is so screwed up there (read: I can't remember
my own username and password) I can't get to them. Would someone be so kind
as to e-mail them to me directly?

3) Where there any landmines you encountered that we should look into first?
Things like accounting glitches, report hiccups, etc..

4) If you had to do it all over again, how would you do it? What would you
watch for?

Thanx bunches, I'm sure I'll be asking more in the next 10 days!

I'll address question #1.
Although the built-in drivers have been ironed out with certain fixes, I have had much better success with the Merant driver overall. It seems more robust, in my opinion. The other needs a number of fixes applied. Plus you are already familiar with Merant.

On the downside, there may be advantages to using the Progress Explorer tool (which once learned is simple to set up). Using Merant means sticking with ProControl.

We are on 5.0 and still use the Merant drivers. Works great. I use the Progress ODBC drivers for our Stand Alone Test database, and often my reports get stuck in certain joins.

Vantage 5.1 is built on progress 9.1C. It comes with the Merant 3.6 SQL-92
Driver.

Based on what I've heard from Epicor Development, Support, and other
Progress developers on sql92@... mailing list, this will be the most
stable ODBC driver yet. Plus there's support for security down to the table
level, so ODBC will no longer be a wide open free for all.

Just a note, the Merant 3.6 Driver is designed to work with progress 9.1C.
It can be made to work with 9.1A, but at the time of 9.1A's release, the
Merant driver was in its beta stages. That is why certain fixes have to be
implemented to get the driver to work.

I may be wrong, but if you don't implement the ODBC driver till 5.1, the
fixes, which are meant for version 5, MAY not be necessary. I'm not sure of
that, but I would definitely check with tech support before applying them,
as they have probably been implemented in V5.1 / P9.1C.

(Haven't done it yet)

Based on the fact that 5.0 is no longer being patched, I'm going to test
upgrade to 5.1 as soon as I get the CD. Based on the fact that its built on
the latest version of progress, which is more SQL compatible and stable, and
the fact that its version 5.1 and not 6, meaning it is 5.0, with some
enhancements and fixes, I think we'll probably end up going to version 5.1
as well.

I still highly reccomend doing a test upgrade on a test server. That way,
you can rely on your own experience when it comes time to upgrade, and any
little problems that are specific to your database can probably be addressed
then, so the live upgrade goes smoother.

>Based on the fact that 5.0 is no longer being patched
Correct, I stated that, and was wrong.

Some quotes from Tim Ligas regarding 5.0 patches versus 5.1 patches, which
lead me to believe I should consider upgrading to 5.1 rather than 5.0, in a
recent post to the group entitled "[Vantage] FW: Custom programming for 5.1
- Was 5.1 released too soon?"

"You've got things a bit confused. 5.1 is definitely of high priority and
getting fixes to major issues out as soon as possible is our goal.
As you can see from the 5.1 readme many issues have been fixed EXCLUSIVELY
FOR 5.1 as it is the current GA release of Vantage."

"While the patches that will be put out for 5.0 grow fewer and fewer, only
very high, business critical issues will even be considered for fixing in
5.00. I personally do not see 5.00 patches continuing much longer, but that
is just my opinon."

"I will state that in my own personal opinion, the 5.1 alpha and beta
program
has been one of the cleanest programs that I have been involved with."

I just installed the ODBC drivers for Progress 9.1C and I DID need to do the odbcuser.r and the odbcfix.r patches to get ODBC to work. Since 9.1C uses the same pgpro915.dll as the 9.1A, you don't need to do the registry update for Outer Joins (as long as you did it for 9.1A). Epicor emailed me the fixes for 5.1 just the other day.
