Motherboard or no motherboard

Chad,

Sounds like you are heading into the black hole of Calcutta. Consider
buying a used PC from DELL via EBay for $ 300-$ 350 or a new Cel-1g tower
for about $ 700 from DELL.

From your description the box you are working on is not exactly new. Does
it really make sense to spend so much time on a box that old. What is your
time worth?

Most motherboard BIOS makes you have to enable the USB keyboard. You could
also look around and see if you have an old serial mouse on one of your
other computer that you could trade off.

As far as updating the PC:
If the old motherboard is an AT or Baby At, you probably will not be
able to find a new motherboard. You would have to look on the used market.
Ebay is a good place for that.

I have had that problem before, however, once the USB Keyboard was found
then I didn't get the mouse error again. I had to take a more drastic
measure and start reloading
motherboard resources.

Try going into device manager and deleting the USB Root hub (and the mouse)
and see if Windows will reload the resources when it reboots. Note: do the
reboot from a shut
down not a restart.

We recently ran into a snag here at work when an employee's keyboard came
unhooked.
We plugged it back in and the next time we booted up the keyboard didn't
work. And on top of that the mouse stopped working then too.

We tried plugging a USB keyboard in but that didn't seem to work either.
One thing that we did notice is that the little plastic piece broke off the
keyboard connector on the one that originally gave us the problem.

So this is what we are left with: a mouse and keyboard that don't work and a
message that says mouse not detected you must shutdown our computer before
installing the PS/2 mouse. And we can't go any further than that!

So does in sound like all those ports got fried from the busted keyboard
connector or could it be something else?

The computer is running with 350 Mhz Intel Pentium II with 128 mgs of Ram.
Does it pay to get a new motherboard with these specs(if the motherboard is
the problem) or just update the entire PC?
