Migrating from 5.2 to 6.1 or 8.0

Guess not.
We are on 518 still, but I don't see that much of an issue. Maybe it's just
me.

We have run them on the same server but not simultaneously. We tried but
they do not play well together. They install fine and run independent
but only run on of the servers at a time. I have run all the clients
from the same PC. I try not to run more than one at a time or the
performance can go down fast. We have not even broached Crystal 10 on
the client. We have only been trying the application portions of the
product. All testing is done on test servers/clients but on our
production network.

Hope this helps. Anyone got any tips on CRM for 6.1. I am in hot water
on this, we had CRM as a key factor for our business plan this year and
I don't see it happening due to performance on 6.1.

Keith

Keith,

In your testing of 6.1 and 8.0 are you running them on the same server
and
clients together or on a test network?
I'm interested in if anyone has 8.0 and 6.1 running along side each
other on
the same server and clients.
Also can you install Crystal 10 from Epicor on the client that uses
Crystal
8.5 with out disrupting the ability to run Vantage 6.1 and continue to
modify reports in Crystal 8.5?

We are testing both versions as well, we are running on 5.1 right now. I
can
tell you that if you use or plan to use CRM, Ver. 6.1 is a dog and Sales
Person Workbench is un-usable. Many of the other Quotation features
(browsers) perform very poorly (we have high end equipment as well). I
have
several open incidents in with support now. Other than that it seems OK.
In
Ver. 8 the entire product is slow, compared to 5.X. I must admit it is
far
better than when we were testing as a Beta, but I can not imagine
running
our business on it, as much as I would love to skip 6.1. The features in
8.0
are incredible however. Some of the user interface bonuses and
flexibility
make it keeper if they can get past the performance issues.

As far as conversion, 5.X to 6.1 is a breeze. We convert our data
monthly to
test with fairly current data. Going from 6.1 to 8 has had some hiccups
but
it can be done successfully.

I would test both versions extensively before moving. The features may
be
attractive but you may not be able to live with the performance hits.

Just my opinion.......

My 2 cents....there is a lot to be gained from stopping at 6.1 and getting familiar with dashboards, customization/personalization and any other new features in between. 8.0 is supposed to be the same function set as 6.1 so getting users up to speed at 6.1 would make the next step a little easier. It would also allow time (if needed) to replace Report Builder reports.

I just got a copy of the 8.0 Upgrade Toolkit and it is daunting in complexity and user impact. Not so much in the new features of the interface but how you want to fit them to your company. There is a lot of opportunity that needs considerable advance thinking about how it will impact your operations - both positive and negative. One example is dashboards as trackers and multiple occurances of them linked to entry screens. How will this affect users in their jobs? Having 8.0 on a test server will help clarify such issues as well as prepare users.

Besides, during this evaluation and analysis time some of the bugs will get worked out of 8.0 by the pioneers and new site installs. You may also be able to get more "real life" info from the pioneers at Perspectives in October by waiting awhile.

5.2 to 6.0 is a fairly big jump with lots of changes in functionality. 6.0
to 6.1 is relatively minor. I would go to 6.1 and wait for the pioneers to
work out the kinks in 8.0. With what I have heard of 8.0 we have decided to
hold off on 8.0 until next year.

There are some resources on the Epicor web site(s). Also check with your CAM. If the traveling roadshow has not been in your area already it would be very much worth attending. I had a tough time explaining to management the differences and why it is such a big deal. Our CAM was nice enough to bring a laptop loaded with it and show them. But that is a lot easier to arrange being so close to their Vantage development office.

Concepts like grid entry, tear off sheets, tabs, cut/paste to and FROM spreadsheets are revolutionary - not to mention dashboard capabilities.

I haven't really been able to see 8.0 at all... how different is it than 6.1. Do the screens look different.. I am just wondering how much of a shock it will be to a general user.

We are testing both versions as well, we are running on 5.1 right now. I
can tell you that if you use or plan to use CRM, Ver. 6.1 is a dog and
Sales Person Workbench is un-usable. Many of the other Quotation
features (browsers) perform very poorly (we have high end equipment as
well). I have several open incidents in with support now. Other than
that it seems OK. In Ver. 8 the entire product is slow, compared to
5.X. I must admit it is far better than when we were testing as a Beta,
but I can not imagine running our business on it, as much as I would
love to skip 6.1. The features in 8.0 are incredible however. Some of
the user interface bonuses and flexibility make it keeper if they can
get past the performance issues.

As far as conversion, 5.X to 6.1 is a breeze. We convert our data
monthly to test with fairly current data. Going from 6.1 to 8 has had
some hiccups but it can be done successfully.

I would test both versions extensively before moving. The features may
be attractive but you may not be able to live with the performance hits.

Just my opinion.......

Hello.

I am currently on version 5.2 and debating between going to 6.1 or
straight
to 8.0 (with Epicor's help, of course!). Does anyone have any general
comments or advice about their experiences with either of the 2
conversions?
Did your data convert seemlessley? What were the pitfalls? Etc.

Thanks!

It is a bit different, but more like true MS Windows compliant programs.
It will be a bit of adjustment but the features you get with screen
manipulation are well worth the price as Todd makes mention of. My only
caution, don't believe what you see. The demo's I have seen are not what
we get in production as far as performance. Your results may vary.......
