Microsoft Upgrade Advantage

In the midst of "doing the math", it does look like paying full price for
Microsoft products instead of Software Assurance better - for our needs.
(Hmmm - charge 'em double, and take half off.) After reading the comments,
it looks like a bunch of the group thinks so too. I'm not completely thru
with the operating systems yet, but the MS Office calculations look like
it's way cheaper to pay full price only when you need it. The worst you
could do is break even the way we use it.

Patrick,

A better question may be ... When does it make economic sense to go with the
Software Assurance program ???

Generally speaking, we only upgrade PC operating systems when we buy new
PC's. Yes, that means we have Win-95, Win-98, Win98-SE, Win-NT, and
Win-2000-Pro as client operating systems. And yes, that does make me insane
at times ... but ...

For us the big one is MS-Office. Very expensive. But we are currently on
Office-2000 and I don't see us upgrading to a newer version until we have
to. Heck, you be hard pressed to convince me that anyone here is using any
functionality beyond WordPad on a day to day basis. More features in newer
releases? We have a hard time using the ones we have now.

Has anyone done the math on the Software Assurance program?

We did the math. To upgrade all the servers, workstations os, Exchange & 50
MS Office to the latest versions, before 7-31-02, $21,570. After, jumps to
$54,463.

We will absolutely not be participating. We will continue to live with
Office-2000 and upgrade to Win-2000 desktops from Win-98 but will not do the
Software Assurance program. If we can make it two years without being
forced to XP we will be money ahead even buying "new" licenses. At that
time we evaluate the entire market for a product that meets our modest needs
without bloat and overkill features. The smooth "revenue stream" motive for
Microsoft is a red herring. What they really want is to get people on a
seamless upgrade path that locks them into their .net web based services
which will be hugely profitable for them and very expensive for us. Maybe
by the time we must switch Linux will be an alternative, including for
Vantage.

I see the problem two ways.

1. I practically have to be at a PC with a fire extinguisher before we get a new one.

Is it worth the cash to upgrade to XP on a 133 MHz Pentium with 16 MB RAM?
Nope....

2. I have enough problems justifying the annual maintenance for all the other software we own.

What in the world makes Microsoft think their software, which is already a mature product, is worth an upgrade scheme?
When was the last time the did any significant improvement to Word (Changing the button graphics doesn't count)

We won't be participating either.
Can you say "Star Office"

Star is an awesome product. Unfortunately, it's fairly bloated (v5 & 6)
and you won't have much luck getting it running on that 16MB P133 you
mentioned. As for any machines made in the last 3 years... a 256MB memory
upgrade will do the trick, and make everything else run better too for a
small price.

Also, in case you haven't heard, Sun recently announced it will start
charging users for future versions of StarOffice! It always cracks me up
when Scott McNealy (CEO, Sun Micrososystems, makers of StarOffice) talks
like Bill Gates is the devil incarnate and then turns around and does
exactly what Microsoft has done in the past!

We are going to Upgrade Advantage for OfficeXP and .Net. We are replacing
all of our computers this year with either thin clients or XP Machines. We
are very heavy MS Access users and that program does tend to have alot of
enhancements with each new version. Currently all of our workstations are
Windows 2000 Pro, which we have been very pleased with, but I can't see
buying all new machines and not getting the latest OS.

I echo the sentiments of everybody who has responded to this thread. I
investigated upgrade advantage and it would cost almost double my average
yearly computer budget for the initial purchase, then add about 50%/year to
stay current with the licensing. Combine that with maintenance costs for
Vantage, anti-virus, and CAD software and it gets big in a hurry!!! One day
on the phone I flat out asked our so called Microsoft rep how I could
justify a $400+ open license of office as long as the difference between a
machine with an OEM version of office and without is $100. He didn't really
have a good answer for me other than the ability to freely upgrade to the
current version. Unfortunately, at least for the short term, I think we are
all bound to a Microsoft OS.

That said, DGM will not be participating in Upgrade Advantage. I will
continue to purchase machines with OEM operating systems and office, only
upgrading on an as needed basis. I'm also going to seriously start looking
at Star Office because as others have said we rarely use even 10% the
functionality of the current offering. Word 2.0 would most definitely be
fine for almost anyone here.

Rick
We are on Gateway's 2 year workstation lease Refresh program, and whenever
we get a new PC, we get an OS and Office with it. So all our mainstream
microsoft software is updated with our workstations on a 2 year cycle. The
gateway workstations have been very reliable (much moreso than when we were
running all compaq workstations).

We have a mix of Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and Office 97/2000/XP. Our machines
are anywhere from a P100 up to a P4-1.8ghz. As long as everyone is
compatible with everyone else, that's all that matters to me.

I see the problem two ways.

1. I practically have to be at a PC with a fire extinguisher before we get a
new one.

Is it worth the cash to upgrade to XP on a 133 MHz Pentium with 16 MB RAM?
Nope....

2. I have enough problems justifying the annual maintenance for all the
other software we own.

What in the world makes Microsoft think their software, which is already a
mature product, is worth an upgrade scheme?
When was the last time the did any significant improvement to Word (Changing
the button graphics doesn't count)

We won't be participating either.

What kind of cost per unit are you looking at? We initially built all our
machines from scratch to train our "young" dept, and never got away from it.
Now we have around 75 users and our median machine is an AMD k6 @ 300 MHz w/
32MB RAM. We've hit the point that pretty soon we're gonna hit a HUGE
upgrade cost just to retain functionality, and if we can get current
machines in addition to current software with a per-month cost comparable to
what Dehr Fuhrer Gates is charging for his stuff alone, our decision's made.
Thanx,
Alan

We will absolutely not be participating. We will continue to live with
Office-2000 and upgrade to Win-2000 desktops from Win-98 but will not do
the
Software Assurance program. If we can make it two years without being
forced to XP we will be money ahead even buying "new" licenses. At that
time we evaluate the entire market for a product that meets our modest
needs
without bloat and overkill features. The smooth "revenue stream" motive
for
Microsoft is a red herring. What they really want is to get people on a
seamless upgrade path that locks them into their .net web based services
which will be hugely profitable for them and very expensive for us.
Maybe
by the time we must switch Linux will be an alternative, including for
Vantage.

Alan,

I run several K6-2 300's and they run just fine. If you will put a 7200 RPM
ATA 100 drive in them and also a Promise Ultra 100 controller you would be
amazed at how fast they really are. Sure, they aren't a 1.6ghz, but they
run just fine for us.

You can get a 20gb Western Digital 7200 RMP Ultra 100 drive for $69.99, a
Promise controller for $30.50 and 256mb memory for $55.00.

That's only about $155.00, add $10.00 for shipping and you are still at only
$165.00. Plus you can pick up Windows XP Pro OEM Full version for $132.00
at the same time.

These prices are from www.googlegear.com <http://www.googlegear.com/> .
