In the Pre-Installation Checklist for Vantage 5.10, at the bottom of
page 11 it states

"The maximum size for any Progress database file (Vantage.b1,
Vantage.d1, or Vantage.lg) is 2 GB. If any database file approaches
this limit, please contact Vantage technical support for assistance."

Our Vantage.d1 file is currently 1.6 GB. Has anyone else dealt with
this issue?
It just means that you will have to change your database to a multi volume
set. I am not looking forward to doing this on ours, but hopefully that
should be another year away. :-}

While I have not dealt with the issue in this context, what you need to
do, pronto, is reconfigure your db into more extents. Since you are on
vantage 5, I am assuming Progress 9.1x.

A little background. As you have discovered, Version 9 is muti-volume,
and version 9.1 adds the concept of Areas. Tables and indexes may be
assigned to areas (indexes can be in a different area than the table
they describe), and each area is made up of one or more extents. Extents
may be either fixed length, (when you create the database, a file of the
specified size is created immediately) or variable length (a small file
is created initially, and it grows as you add data to it). As noted, no
single extent can exceed 2Gb. The data area to which a table or index is
assigned is not part of the CRC of the table or index, so you can
reconfigure you Data Base with invalidating the .r files. By default
version 9 databases are created with only a schema area. You can put
tables in this area, but PSC strongly recommends not to do so. Also, you
may have only one variable extent per data area, and it must be the last
one in the data area.

So to address your problem. Get hold of the Database Admin Guide and
Reference. Available in PDF format at www.progress.com, if you can't
find the CD. Chapter 7 contains a detailed description of the steps
needed to restructure a data base. The basic steps are:

- MAKE A BACKUP.
- MAKE ANOTHER BACKUP.
- create a file containing the details of areas/extents that you want to
add.
- using the prostrct add utility apply the new structure to the data
base .
- if you have created new data areas, use the proutil tablemove and/or
indexmove utilities to move tables and indexes to their new homes.
- test the new structure.
- if all is well, move it into production.
- Note that if you apply new extents to your existing db, the current
variable length extent will become a fixed length extent, at its current
size.

The above is a very brief summary of what need to be done. There are, of
course, many other options available. The ones you choose will largely
depend on you bravery (foolhardiness?), previous experience, and
available resources. More help is available www.peg.com. Subscribe to

You can also talk to Vantage support about this. There is
a Progress procedure that can be used to copy your existing
database into one with multiple extents. They helped us
through this same thing.

Chris,

We went multi-volume awhile back. The one thing I remember was that Vantage
Support really knew their stuff. They even explained it so good that a bean
counter like myself could understand it. Call them on this one.
