The main risk with changing data with ODBC is it bypasses progress triggers.
If you delete or change the name of a part with ODBC, and it has any
existing transactions against it anywhere in the database, or has any parent
or child parts or operations, or is called out anywhere else in the
database, then you will most certainly end up with problems in the future.
Adding new records, or changing the values of non-linked fields such as the
description is somewhat less risky, but we've decided mitigate the risk of
incurring Epicor Billable Support costs by purchasing the import utility
from Epicor. If you mess up vantage in any way using ODBC, the only way
you'll get help from Epicor is by paying them an arm and a leg, not to
mention the in-house costs of downtime resulting from a corrupted database.
Many progress developers and administrators use SQL92 ODBC access to effect
changes to their databases, but unless you're a progress expert and have
examined every single Progress trigger related to the fields you are
modifying, and you have written code that mirrors those triggers on the side
of the application that is using ODBC, my recommendation is to stay away
from any edits of a vantage database using ODBC.

As of 5.0 you can. We use it currently to create memos for some of our
intranet pages. I've also used it to change descriptions and such. The
real danger is database corruption if you start messing around with key
fields and links. I can't blame tech support for not telling people about
it but it does create a big security risk as anyone with a little ODBC
knowledge can directly access the database outside of Vantage.

Ed,
We are new to Vantage -still in implementation stage. Are you saying
that changes might be made via Access to Vantage/Progress database?
We are wondering how we would implement a global price change on
thousands of line items in Part Master without the IMPORT utility.
