Maintain Sessions

Good thought but Automatic Updates is already turned off on our
server.

Isn't this just sooo much fun?

Thanks,
Ken

(Vantage 8.03)

We just went live on 8.03 on July 1st and we're all adjusting to the
new "system". I'm the Network Manager and System Administrator for
the company.

So, I was at the server console yesterday morning to clear out old
sessions just like I used to do every morning in Avante. There were
a lot of sessions dated the previous day and I blew them all away. I
didn't touch any sessions with the current date.

A few seconds later, (yes, seconds) two users called me to say they
just lost their connection to Vantage and can't get back in. Well,
the correlation between the two events was two strong to ignore. I
figure I blew away some active sessions. Even so, why did it prevent
those users from getting back in? I don't understand this.

In order to get those users back in I stopped and restarted the
processes but that didn't help. 8:00AM was coming up fast so for the
sake of expediency, I simply restarted the whole machine and all was
well again.

So, how can I tell if a session is old and not used versus a
currently active session that, for whatever reason, has an old date
attached to it? Meanwhile, I'm going to let the old sessions build
just to see what happens.

I'm puzzled.

If these are MES users, they may not have Clocked Out (so they are still on a past Payroll date) - they only Logged out.

For MES & full license users, they should not leave Vantage open over night or you are just asking for problems.

We're not uses any MES licenses yet.

Not much I can do about users not logging out. I have turned off
multiple sessions for most of the people though, so if they don't,
they have to ask me to clear their old session before they can get
back in.

Our Vantage server crashed again this weekend. Vantage was non-
responsive again this morning for the second time in less than a
week...and this time I hadn't cleared out any old sessions.

Here we go...

Unless management likes the system shutting down daily because all licenses are consumed, make it an enforced rule (with repercussions) that people must not leave sessions open.

...Ask them if their payroll activity (and resulting paychecks) can be managed so laxly. (Works every time.)

We had these same issues with sessions hanging up. Because we had a
limited number of user licenses (10) we limited each user to one
session (this is done in the user settings in the company settings).
Some of our key employees who need access no matter what we allowed
them to have multiple sessions because we couldn't afford for them to
be down long enough for me to clear their session in case I wasn't
available immediately. I do try to check daily just to make sure we
don't have multiple sessions open for those key employees because
that would use 2+ of our licenses. I always close any session that
is not today's date.

If a computer crashed or shut down without completely closing Vantage
first (as with Windows updates) their session would hang. I am
trying to change the settings on the individual computers to NOT have
windows automatically install updates and have the users click to
install them after they close Vantage. Also, we have mandated that
all computers be shut down and Vantage closed appropriately before
they leave at night. We also ran into Windows updating at night and
causing some of the Vantage sessions to hang.

Also if you have windows updates automatically installing on your
Vantage server then you will find the system to be unresponsive when
updates are available by Microsoft. In fact, several updates have
been put out by Windows in the past week so this may have been your
problem.

It look us a long time to put 2 and 2 together to find out why the
system would crash and we would have to go restart the server.

I hope this helps!
