Locking PO Qty prevents Cancel suggestions

Is there any way to prevent Increase/Decrease suggestions by locking the quantity on the PO release, but still allow cancel suggestions?

Why are you Locking the Qty? Are your Purchasing settings well tuned?

We’re getting Increase and Decrease messages within lead time.
I don’t think they’re well-tuned, we’re working on it though!

I would offer that you set your Purchasing variables by Part instead of trying to build a process around it.
I know that isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it will help you in the long run.

If you turn off lock qty and see Increase/Decrease message, try tweaking some of the variables in the Part Maintenance and see the results. In this case, try Min Order Qty and Order Multiples.

With the Min Order Qty, If I set it to 100, for example, will MRP wait until there is a need for 100 before creating a new PO suggestion, or will it set the qty to 100 whenever it needs to generate a PO suggestion?
I don’t think we’ve used this setting, and they’re all currently zero.
Example, requirement for 50 on May 1, no PO suggested.
requirement for 30 on May 15, still no PO Suggested
requirement for 50 on May 20, now exceeds 100, so now a suggestion for 130?

(Part entry: General / Sites / Detail tab, purchasing sub-section, right?)

Min Order Qty means that whenever a PO Suggestion is created, it will be for a minimum of 100 pieces. Even if you only “need” 1 to fulfill demand, the PO Suggestion will be for 100.

Demand Scenario:
20 needed on 1/20
30 needed on 2/5
40 needed on 3/15
20 needed on 4/7

If the Min Order Qty is 100, it will have you order 100 due 1/20 and 100 due 4/7 (because you will be 10 short for the last one). This will leave 90 left over.
You can also change your order multiples and how often you should order (I forget the field) so that if you only order ever 120 days, and the Order Multiple is 10, you can order 110 and your dates can move all around inside that window and not cause a change suggestion.

Days of Supply?

So in this same example, now MRP runs on 1/21, and Days of Supply is 120 (May 21)

I have the 1/20 order of 100 and the 4/7 order of 100 - if I now have 20 more required on May 2, no increase will occur, the 4/7 order will cover it. I won’t see a increase suggestion.

Or if the PO with 20 demand on 4/7 is deleted, dropping total need of this part to 90, covered by the 1/21 order of 100 - does the 4/7 PO for 100 get a cancel suggestion still?

Yes. You should get a cancel suggestion.

Hi Anthony

Have you set Planning Time Fence, Reschedule Out Time Delta and Reschedule in Time Delta?

Dean

Hello Dean,
Yes all parts that I’ve been working with planning on have Time fence and the in/out time delta settings.
For these purchased parts, the lead time is very long (130 to 160 days) and the In/Out time deltas on these purchased ones are typically 30 days. Majority of that time is on the water and waiting in customs in US, so couldn’t change the PO anyway, at that late stage.

Should planning time fence be more in line with the lead time, on purchased parts where we’re always getting it from same vendor?
Would it make more sense to increase out the planning time fence?

Time Fence might do it , not sure if there is a hierarchy with In and Out Deltas. It might prevent postpone suggestions if there is a minor( compared to lead time) Change in demand.

Here is how Epicor describes Planning Time Fence ( lifted from Part Class Maint.)
Planning Time Fence

Defines a time limit for changes within this part class. This value is the number of days from the current system date that demands requiring supply changes will not be considered by the system. All demands outside of this time limit, however, will be processed as normal.

Reschedule Out Time Delta

This field lets you control when MRP will provide messages to Reschedule Out orders. The value you enter defines a number of days. Any reschedule out message that is either less than or equal to this value will not generate a change suggestion. This value prevents messages from appearing.

Reschedule Out Time Delta

This field lets you control when MRP will provide messages to Reschedule Out orders. The value you enter defines a number of days. Any reschedule out message that is either less than or equal to this value will not generate a change suggestion. This value prevents messages from appearing.

If it’s already too late to cancel, then why do you need cancel suggestions?
