The lock order quantity will grey out the order line and the only changes you can make is on the release level in terms of quantity, ship date, etc. As you enter releases it will decrement the remaining amount so that the releases will always add up to the line quantity and will not allow you to ship more than was the line amount was for. There is a default for this on the company master as well but if you want to be selective for which orders you do it on select lock order quantity here/ The thing you need to remember is that the first release you create is one where you want to set the ship date way out in the future (we use a fake ship to called "Future" so it doesnt show up on your scheduled shipments report as a release that needs to ship immediately

I am confused about the workings of the lock order qty on sales order lines as it pertains to shipments. Is there any documentation available that will explain this better than the help screens?
The main question is if we over ship release 1 should the following releases be reduced if the lock order qty flag is set?
thanks,
bill
