Label printing

We are laser printing 4x5 labels (4 on sheet) from RB. Filtering on Packing
Slip #. Huge issue lately with multiple customers demanding compliance to
their individual specs. Reminds me of early days of EDI. Laser labels are
running about 4 cents each (incl toner) so someday we will compare to media
cost of 4x6 thermal transfer and calc payback on hardware purchase. For now
volume is low enough that laser is OK.

If I did it in Crystal it would be from packing slip .dbf files (print
preview & cancel to create) and on favorites bar as exported report (CR
8.0).

Our Shipping Dept. has now trashed 4 $500.00 Label printers in a
year. Before I go shopping, I had a few questions. Regarding sheet
fed printers, how do you keep from wasting labels. If your labels are
4 to a page, for example, and you only need one? I'd rather do sheet
fed (I can always rob from another department in an emergency), but I
am also looking at the Zebra line of label printers. Any comments?

Thanks - Les
Go with Zebra.

They have several product lines. The better units are built like tanks ---
approx $ 1,400 - $ 1,600 ... and worth it.

Try SystemID Warehouse - www.systemid.com <http://www.systemid.com>

Once you figure out what model you are interested - also price www.cdw.com
<http://www.cdw.com> - Prices on web pages are for reference only - you can
almost always get better prices online with a sales rep.

I'd suggest starting with a Zebra 105SE ...

Note the Stripe units are the lower grade of Zebra's. Given that your
shipping dept likes to use these printers for frisbees I'd stay with the
105SE style boxes.

SystemID also sells scanners etc ... good outfit when you are looking for
bar code stuff.

Good Luck

We have just recently purchased a Zebra printer and are very happy with
it! We are using it to make bar code labels and shipping labels as
well.It is easy to set up and easy to use.

What kind of printers were those? (so the rest of us can avoid them!)

Running any kind of stock through a laser more than once is asking for
trouble. Any that's even more true for heavier sheet labels with some of
them already peeled off. Labels jamming or peeling loose in a laser can
trash expensive fusers and other mechanicals.

No personal experience with the Zebras, but they seem to be the standard
for any kind of durable, high volume requirements.

Sato 200CX Label printers. Practically all plastic, and the service centers
won't service them. They call them throw-aways. Which is what we did with
the Purchasing Agent who bought them. He bought them through a catalog,
without ever seeing one. This is why I've asked for the groups opinion. That
way, if I get stuck with another headache, I can P&M at you guys... LOL -

We use both a Laser (sheet feed, multiple up) and a Zebra (roll feed, one
up). Go with the Zebra. We intend to switch everything to the Zebra once
we use up the existing sheet labels and get them reformatted for the Zebra.
There are several hundred label formats to revise. Wish we had started with
the Zebra, instead of the Laser.
