Label Printers

We also use a Zebra T402. I modified the label that was in Vantage
(Crystal). We use 3 x 5 labels I believe. Works well. We print them
right along with the packing slips.

Although we're not ready to use barcoding (yet), we'd like to start printing labels at material receipt.

Could you make any hardware recommendations?

Environment: Warehouse; will be a network printer
To be labeled: Majority - stainless steel component raw material

TIA

I use the Datamax i4206's
http://www.datamaxcorp.com/products/i-class/
fast, reliable, moderately priced comes with Easy Label32 Pro bundle

Lee,

What's "moderately priced?" Also, does it use standard windows print
drivers? (ie: works with Crystal and other apps, no problem?)

Has anyone used those el-cheapo $200 Seiko label printers? I know
they look flimsy, but we have need for a low-volume label printer in a
couple places in our shop. If they work OK (even for a year or two) it
would be preferable to a high-dollar industrial label printer. Does Bic
make label printers? :)

Wayne,
Moderate being relative... the $1800 was moderate compared to the S class or
other Zebra's of a comparable variety.
$1600-2300 depending upon options and software bundle. Ours run sun-up to
sun-up stopping only to change rolls.
I consider it mid point entry into industrial strength label printers.
Complete with NT drivers for printing from Crystal, etc...

We want to install a printer in our shipping department to just print labels
from Vantage. I am assuming that this can be done. What printers are others
using to do this? Also, are there any "gotchas" to watch out for? Thank you.

We're a little outdated right now. We're using the software program
Easylabel but still using our old Epson 1050 to print them out on (it's not
really made for label printing).

I'm using an Epson LQ-570 and modified the crystal form to print on a
standard UPS shipping label. Simple.

Great question, seeing as how I am also evaluating label printers. If I
could expand your question a bit I am wondering about thermal transfer label
printers such as from Zebra, Intermec, Datamax, etc.... Many of our
customers are requiring bar coded labels in a 4" X 6" format. I have used
Intermec with great success elsewhere (other systems) but they are
expensive. Media costs are an issue too. My biggest question is printing
straight from Crystal (modify a label from packing list .dbf data) and if
there are Windows drivers for this type of printer or if I have to use the
printer's control codes and 'store' formats (as with Intermec).

Otherwise I was considering a small laser printer with cut-sheet labels. I
don't trust dot matrix for bar codes.

We use Zebra 140xii and 105se printers throughout our shop for shipping
labels, pan tags, reject tags, etc. They are nice heavy duty printers in
metal cabinets (we tried the cheaper models in the plastic cases and they
broke down within a year. Our original 90 model (11yrs old) is still
running with limited maintenance (had to replace the drive belt twice)). I
have them connected to the network using HP Jetdirect print servers which
allows me to share them among the computers.

As for the labels, I found that the crystal reports worked but was too
limited unless using ODBC. We have several customers who want their
specific label design on their parts. We use Label Matrix to design and
print the labels. I have setup a user field on the Customer VBForm to
contain the name of the label format the customer requires, then added a
simple progress program to print labels on the Vantage menu. (The Progress
program dumps the Vantage Shipping data to a DBF file [just like crystal
does] for Label Matrix to read, then executes the Label Matrix print routine
with the label format defined in the Customer VBForm. All the shipping
person has to do is select the Packing slip number from a drop down box
(default to most current packing slip) and click the "Print Labels" button,
the number of labels is required is read off the packing slip line items.)

Does anyone know anything about Eltron printers? Specifically their model
3742. The Zebra printers are quite expensive and the Eltron printers seem
like a less costly approach.
