Just an Idle thought NOT off topic

I've looked at some notebooks with weights around 2-3 pounds, I've
loaded up a clipboard to about the same weight. I'm going to lug the
thing around to get an idea on what its like to lug something like that
around.

I did run the Citrix client a while ago on a HP Jornada PPC and a HPC.
For
the Jornada PPC (similar to your IPAQ) I found a hack that enables you
to
flip your screen from "portrait" to "landscape", which increased the
functionality of the device. For both devices you (or your Veep) is
going
to have to play with the sizing. If you set the resolution for things
to be
legible on the screen you find yourself "scrolling" over the Citrix
window
(kind of like trying to look at a big room through a peep hole). If you
zoom out the resolution so you can actually see and navigate windows,
you
won't be able to read any text. My conclusion is that the things can
help
you in a bind, but they are pretty frustrating to work with on a daily
basis.

NOW, if Epicor would develop a Vantage Client especially for those
handhelds... I could see the usability of these gadgets increase.
Wishful
thinking....

I guess it depends on how far our VP wants to go. I was actually
thinking of productivity enhancements (silly me) as opposed to high end
stocking stuffings. Like, improving our receiving operations, tracking
maintenance activities without going to a workstation. Like a WiFi
notebook with a Barcode reader, to take inventory or receive and ship
materials. Dumb stuff like that.

Shirley,

After my initial reponse I remembered that Citrix does have a Pocket PC
/ CE
client. At the time I was playing with the IPAC, I didn't have a Citrix
server so I did not bother looking at this. I now have a Citrix box
with
Vantage published. I downloaded the Citrix client for Pocket PC but I
can't
try it out today because the IPAC is out of the office with it's owner.
That might be a via option for you.

A couple questions for those intrepid pioneers who have gone ahead of us chickens and upgraded to 6.0 or 6.10. I am planning on upgrading this Friday (mandatory vacation day for company - except for IT person). I know I should do a trial upgrade but this time I have no spare server to use so I am going to try it on the fly.

1. The 5.2 to 6.0 upgrade mentions using two mapped drive letters in order to leave users pointing at current Progress 9.1D location. Did you do this or did you re-install Progress in same \Epicor\ folder that \Mfgsys60\ uses so that it is all in the same place?

2. Did you end up having to re-install all the clients? If I use 2 drive letters wouldn't I have to "touch" each client anyway?

3. Report Builder - Did "Custom Reports" entries all have to be re-done to point to new location of PRL's? Did reports have to be "re-saved" as was required between 4.0 and 5.0?

4. Do you need to apply latest 6.0 patch before going on to do 6.0 to 6.10 upgrade?

5. Most significant thing users will notice Monday morning when they see 6.10 (after using 5.20 for a year)?

6. Any excessively long data conversions or schema changes (as compared to the 4.0 to 5.20 upgrades)?

7. Any other notable "gotchas" or surprises in the process (such as weak or missing instructions)?

8. Is 6.10 stable enough (comapred to 6.0) to go straight to? We don't have CRM and 6.1seems to be mainly CRM related so we could stop at 6.0 if it is less likely to have code defects.

Thanks,

Hi Todd,

We upgraded from 5.1 to 6.0 on 12/06/03.

The only problem we ran into was the L value for

Lock table in the progress database.

We run citrix and the emails or global alerts don't work in citrix.

The engineering work bench is a big difference.

You have to set up a group for each person working in

The engineering work bench. We use the data collection

Module. And the shop guys were able to adjust. Routing information

Was harder to find at first.

If you can, try and talk to Ben Nixon. He would be able to give you

A wealth of knowledge and prevent problems. He installed our 6.0

And there haven't been any problems since 12/6/03

Good luck, and happy new year,

John Mansfield

I have a new Dell Server I was to put in this week but management
neglected to tell me we were not closed
Sorry

Anyway
Our current server is 5.2.321

My new Dell server has versions 5.1, 6.0 & 6.1 running on it
I have converted data over to 6.1 to let our implementation team get
a feel for it
What i have foudn so far is

Version 6.0 and higher wants you to put everything in the EPICOR Folder

You have to backup you 5.2 database
Restore it to 6.0
Do a schema change
Then a conversion

Then do the same thing for 6.1
It works but its alot to go thru
Our thinking was if we were going to go to anything other than 5.2
then we might as well go to 6.1 and be done with it

The other thing that you need to address
All your report builder files need remapped and service numbers
changes as well as custom report links within vantage need to poin to
the new location.
You can map to the same drive for 5.2 but 6.1 is totatlly different
service numbers and progress locations

6.1 has a nice GUI Database admin tool that helps

I have not gone live with the new server as I stated before but have
several workstation that are able to run both 5.2 and 6.1 on the new
server. (Test terminals)

THe best way to do it is to uninstall progress first
Then reinstall and use the default 6.1 location for progress for 5.2
as well
E:\Epicor\Prgs91d

You may run into some OCX Errors as well

One other thing
The documentation says data collection needs a minimum of a Pentium II
350mhz
I got 6.1 DC to run on a Pentium 100 with 32 megs of ram
It wasn't pretty and took awhile to load but it works

I hope that mny struggles thru this conversion will help you avoid them!

Let me know if I can help you with anything else

or did you re-install Progress in same \Epicor\ folder that \Mfgsys60\ uses

I tried to install all into one directory but I couldn't get the database
upgrade to run properly. Wound up restoring the original installation
(epic52) and adding the new (epicor) directory and using 2 drive mappings.

2. Did you end up having to re-install all the clients? If I use 2 drive
letters wouldn't I have to "touch" each client anyway?

Yes, because mappings were different/

3. Report Builder - Did "Custom Reports" entries all have to be re-done to

Yes

4. Do you need to apply latest 6.0 patch before going on to do 6.0 to 6.10

Don't know this one. going to 6.1 in the new year.

5. Most significant thing users will notice Monday morning when they see
6.10 (after using 5.20 for a year)?

Lots of little stuff. Many moons have traveled the sky since our upgrade

6. Any excessively long data conversions or schema changes (as compared to
the 4.0 to 5.20 upgrades)?

NO

7. Any other notable "gotchas" or surprises in the process (such as weak or

NO

Todd,

Before you think 6.0 to 6.1,

Install 6.0, patch 6.0, and then bring the database from 5.2 to 6.0!!!

I can't stress enough...Patch before you upgrade the database TO 6.0.

Do not run the "upgrade database" procedure until you have loaded the
latest patch. If you upgrade your 5.2 to 6.0 without a patch, all
custom menu items (report shortcuts and everything) will be gone
forever. If you patch first and then upgrade the database to 6.0 you
will be happy. I don't remember the patch that was the one that fixed
this, but get current before you update the database.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Thank you, THANK YOU!!! for that very specific warning. Exactly the sort of thing I was worried about. I will update my personal checklist so I don't forget this step.

Thanks to everyone else for their thoughts on upgrading too.

As with my 4.0 to 5.20 experience I will compile a review of the whole process and post here for others to refer to. The cleaner I can make these upgrades go then the cleaner the review will be for others - so the tips here today will be helpful to a lot of people.

Shirley,

I did a "proof of concept" about a year ago on a Compaq IPAC using an SMC
compactflash 802.11b wireless network card. If I remember correctly, I had
to add and expansion pack to the IPAC also. I installed Danware Software's
Netop remote control software on the IPAC, similar to PC Anywhere but is
like the Cadilac of remote control software. It worked just fine but due to
screen size and video resolution, I did not find this to have much utility.
The Netop interface allowed for viewing the controlled PC's video full
screen to fit the IPAC's display ( you could recognize enough of the desktop
to navigate effectively but way too small to use/view an application ) or at
a zoom level but then you saw so little of the application screen that you
had to scrool the IPAC display too much to see all the info you needed.

The wireless connection was very strong even at a distance of well over 300
feet from the access point - quite impressive. Perhaps a different software
setup would yield more acceptable results. It was fun putting the thing
together and very cool to show-off but in the end didn't pan out to be very
useful.

Good luck,

While being tasked to set up our latest executive toy, (HP IPAC) for
our Ex VP, I was wondering if anyone had set up a similar hand held
device using what ever wireless network technology so that a direct
connection to Vantage was possible. There are numerous possibilities
that come to mind in connecting Vantage via a hand held.

Just another thought....with customization in 6.0 might it be possible to strip down a screen to the essentials, and/or at least place all the handheld relevant fields in one "zone", to make them fit a small screen?

I did run the Citrix client a while ago on a HP Jornada PPC and a HPC. For
the Jornada PPC (similar to your IPAQ) I found a hack that enables you to
flip your screen from "portrait" to "landscape", which increased the
functionality of the device. For both devices you (or your Veep) is going
to have to play with the sizing. If you set the resolution for things to be
legible on the screen you find yourself "scrolling" over the Citrix window
(kind of like trying to look at a big room through a peep hole). If you
zoom out the resolution so you can actually see and navigate windows, you
won't be able to read any text. My conclusion is that the things can help
you in a bind, but they are pretty frustrating to work with on a daily
basis.

NOW, if Epicor would develop a Vantage Client especially for those
handhelds... I could see the usability of these gadgets increase. Wishful
thinking....
