Subject: RE: [Vantage] Job Entry and other screens freezing
YES! We are seeing this a lot too. Some people, like in Purchasing, keep
Job Entry open at the same time as PO Entry and hop back and forth and they
are constantly freezing. I was hoping it was a memory issue (the Purch. PC
had only 64MB) so I added some (a whopping 32MB, all I had on hand) and was
waiting to see if it got better. Too early to tell. But I have been in the
computer room killing phantom sessions with ProMon far too often since going
to 5.20. (patch 211).
We are also seeing similar symptoms with checking parts back in in
Engineering Workbench but now that you mention it those people frequently
have job entry open at same time.
Not having enough "evidence" I have not contacted Epicor about this yet.
But if this is not an odd case here I am going to ask users to not keep job
entry open or use it while other screens are open and see of freezing
stops.
[mostly win-98, various IE, various MDAC (2.5 on server), Norton set to
ignore V: drive, mostly 128MB some 64MB, Outlook running]

Subject: [Vantage] Job Entry and other screens freezing
5.20 Vantage Users:
Got a weird problem here and I am not exactly sure what to do next to fix
this.
The Situation:
We have close to 50 machines on our network (some Windows 95, most NT 4.0, a
couple 2000, and a couple XP). All machines either have 3COM or Intel
network cards in them. All machines have the latest service pack on them
with IE 6.0 SP1. Basic applications are installed (Microsoft Office 97
including Outlook 98, Norton Antivirus 2000, MDAC 2.7, Vantage).
All the machines are either Gateway Pentium II, III's or custom AMD 800's
with 256 MB RAM.
Our network design is pretty much a Dell PowerEdge Server with Dual Pentium
III 550 processors with 512 MB RAM and 56 GIG HD space with dual Intel NIC
Server Cards connected directly to a 3COM 4400 10/100 Switch.
The Problem:
Our 95 machines don't really have the problem that I know of cause those are
only used for data collection.
However, all of the other machines seem to lock up when performing certain
tasks on them within Vantage. Mainly Job Entry. If a user has Job Entry
open and then tries opening multiple screens thereafter, Vantage will
suddenly freeze and stop responding, an End Task has to be performed then
and then that user must relog into Vantage.
This so far is mainly happening on a couple of NT 4.0 boxes about 5 to 6
times a day, some NT boxes work just fine. As for the 2000 and XP boxes, it
has happened there as well but a lot less frequently, possible 1 time a day
or every other day.
Looking for ideas here on how to remedy this situation.
We started having this problem immediately when we jumped onto 5.2 since its
release with patch level 209, we are now at 211, problems still occur.
I have checked the host file and services file on these machines and those
appear just fine. I have now disabled Norton antivirus per Epicor's request
and am now testing that for the next couple of days to see results of this;
so far, same freezing problem is still occurring according to my colleagues.
I have reformatted and reinstalled the machines. I have made sure no other
things are running when this is happening. I have checked network
connections and cabling.
Everything operates at Full Duplex with no problems, no other applications
on any system have any slow performance or freezing issues.
I am just now confused at what to troubleshoot next after this.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions of what to try next that would be
much appreciated, I've tried talking to tech support at Epicor and they
can't seem to replicate this problem nor do they know exactly what might be
causing this since it seems no one else are having these issues.
I couldn't think at what possibly could be different in our network
environment compared to a normal one, we are pretty standard with
everything. Nothing really third party, experimental, or not common.
Thanks again everyone for any help provided,
