We have done data collection for years, with Vantage and other software.
Lot sizes run from 1-50 pieces depending on whether we are running standard
or custom parts. Cycle times run from 2 minutes to 2 hours per operation
depending on the size and complexity of the part.
We do it so we can track profitability on our custom parts. Each work cell
has a pc with data collection running on the pc. Every job has a shop
packet with the sequence of operations. Routings are very similar for each
family of parts, so they are relatively easy to set up.
There are as many reasons to do data collection as there are reasons to NOT
do data collection. The same is true for the job module as well. Too many
reasons to have an email discussion since it is very specific to how you do
business and what you want out of the software.
Call me if you want to get into specifics.

Subject: [Vantage] Job data collection
We are a small precision metal parts job shop. We have not used the job
module because we process many small lot sizes with 10-15 operations in a
very short time like within days. We are concerned it's not worth all the
data entry to track parts. We are concerned tracking will disrupt employee
concentration. We want to know if companies really do data entry tracking in
similiar situations and if so how.
