HP 1200 Printer

We have an older HP4000 series network laser and two network Konica copiers
that print, copy, scan, fax, etc. The Konica handles up to 11x17 which is
fine for our CAD requirements. We trashed all of the small lasers as they
died. They are hard to network and cost too much compared to the bigger
lasers and copiers.

My home office has a Brother multi-function laser that copies, scans and
faxes.

Marty,

We had a bunch of cheap individual laser printers (big mistake made early
on)
We now only use lasers like the 1200 where they are too far away from the
network printers.
1200 is a nice printer for an individual, not as a network printer.

However, If you are looking for relatively rapid printing for general and
special purpose (CAD/Graphics)
We have also 2 HP LJ5000's, I think the new version is LJ5100
Plugged directly into the network.
17 pages a minute, not sure what 5100 does.
1200 dpi
Makes great graphics and CAD plots. (We use ours primarily for CAD plots)
Buy lots of RAM if you are printing big images.
Holds entire ream of 8.5 x 11 and half a ream of 11 x 17.

If speed is really a concern and money is not a problem.
Look at Canon Image Runner Series multifunction copier, printer, scanner,
fax etc.
28 pages a minute or more depending on the one you purchase/lease.
Stores documents onboard for printing when ever you want.
Good graphics and CAD output. Also does up to 11 x 17
Not as high res as the HP Laser Jet but still better than what most people
need.
Our networked multi-function machines have virtually replaced all small
laser printers and old photocopiers here.

I strongly recommend the Image Runner machines.
They go and go and go 80,000 plus pages on one and 120,000 plus on the
other.
No breakdowns - only normal maintenance.
No toner to purchase (its part of the yearly service)

Good luck

I think I bought the wrong printer because -

Wayne's slow USB data rate comments concerned me so I checked with the
users of this printer and found out that they will be printing excel graphs
based on data imported
from an external source and some Autocad files. Both are graphics
intensive. They'll need something faster. They don't need paper larger than
letter size but I'll sure hear
about it if it's too slow.

Do you agree that I would be better off with something else / faster ?? If
so, tell me what to buy!!

Based on this group's discussion a couple of weeks ago I purchased an HP 1200n
printer. The printer came in with an external JetDirect box and a USB cable. I
also talked with my IT consultant and he said he tried to install one of these a
few weeks ago, had nothing but trouble and ended purchasing a different printer.
The problems were with the USB communication setup on these printers. He said he
also went on HP's website and found many issues regarding the 1200n.

Have any of you experienced any types of setup problems with the 1200n? If so,
what were the solutions? I don't want to head down the setup path if I'm just
gonna end up returning the printer and purchasing something else.

Both the one here at work and the one I bought for home were very easy to setup and have worked great. But then they are both plain 1200's without the network port so that may be the trouble source. Can you try setting it up (for testing) directly to a PC via the USB cable? If I recall correctly though there are some USB issues where you must install the software before the printer is connected. If you connect the printer first and it goes into the auto-find routine it causes a bunch of grief for the driver install. I've seen this issue with a bunch of USB devices.

Marty,

I have an HP 1200n with the external jet direct box. It works great for me.
I plugged it into my network and it grabbed an IP address from the DHCP
server and was ready to go.

One tip... go to the HP web site and download the " HP Install Network
Printer Wizard". Install this on the workstations that need to print. They
have different versions for each operating system. After installing the
wizard it will automatically search your network and give you a list of HP
printers that are attached with the Jet Direct interface. Just select the
one you want and it will walk you through the installation. I had to search
the HP support site for "wizard" before I found it. I also have it
downloaded if you would like me to e-mail a copy.

I bought a 1200 for home use back in Dec. No network box; it's USBed into
my Win2000 PC and shared to a couple other PCs in the house.

I think it's an AWESOME little $360 printer, and have recommended it to others.

Do you have some specific problem with it, or just concerned you bought a
lemon? My only gripe, is the data rate through the USB is really
slow. Graphics and other data-intensive pages can be slow, taking 20, 30
or more seconds per page. I only have USB 1.0 on the PC, the printer is
supposedly USB 2.0 capable. But even 1.0 should have plenty of bandwidth
to keep a printer scooting. Sometimes it only seems to get about 5 - 10KB
/ sec through it. I haven't tried it parallel.

For the most part, it fully lives up to the first page in <10 seconds and
15 PPM claim. Half-ream paper tray, decent manual feed, PCL 5 & 6, Post
Script [didn't that used to be a $1000 option?!] Kick A$$!! Did I mention
the $360 price tag?!

Like I said, I think it's an GREAT little printer. If you already have it,
I'd at least give it a shot and see. The USB throughput may just be a
problem with my PC. I would hope that going from the HP server to HP
printer, it wouldn't be an issue. On most stuff, mine slams out the full
15ppm claimed.

Marty,

If you have the network version 1200n then the USB cable is just to get the
Jet Direct box connected to the printer. We print loads of Excel, Vantage
forms and graphics to ours with no problems.

If you want a really killer printer get an HP5000N like I have in the CAD
department. It's got huge amount of memory and can process and spit out a
100MB Pro/E plot file in about 10 seconds. It also prints 11X17 for
drawings, but it's going to set you back about $2000.
