HELP! Can no longer connect to database

Nope, not it. 40 + 10 (no ODBC) set to 100 for the -n (25 servers, broker
never really goes past 14 of these). Not an issue. Besides, why would it
have happened at 1:00am when I don't have any users at work or logged in,
just the 10 DC stations.

Mike
In PET have you compared the default config of both you training and
production databases for Max Users and Max Servers. I know when I upgraded
to Version 6 I had done all the math and I would up having to call Tech
Support and Virginia led me through some NEW MATH ?? to figure users and
servers. I have 69 users + 12 data collection licenses. I'm set at 124 users
and 56 servers. This is like 50 % higher than the calc's by the book.

Wasn't running backup at 1:00 pm when second time it locked. Backup does
not include the database folder, backup is caught with Probkup and stored
elsewhere and tape backs that up. I have look at everything obvious and not
so obvious over and over again. I've checked drive space and only 33% used,
checked for temp files, checked for viruses, checked for unusual processes
running, checked for locked/write mode files, checked network traffic,
pinged servers and the database, checked wires, etc. I have a whole list of
things to walk through and check when a problem arises and I can usually
find the problem. This one has me stumped. I've thought that it maybe one
of the CPU's, RAM or HardDrives going bad, but I would think that it would
also effect the training database which is on the same server and same
mapped network drive (just different subfolder) which it didn't effect, but
this is still something I will watch since the server is 4+yrs old. It is
not a hardware switch issue because with Vantage installed on the server
itself, I could not connect. I'm leaning toward one of the hidden tables in
the database that progress uses and populates once a connection is requested
(_Connect, _MyConnection, _Users, etc). I'm thinking if something could
have locked one of these records/tables and prevented another record from
being created, thus not allowing any more connections to the database. I've
been searching through the Progress website for hours and haven't found
anything yet that could match this problem, and Epicor support is any help
(as usual). Sat on a tech support call for almost an hour (30 minutes just
to get someone to answer the phone) last night with the only suggestion to
try a different pc or a different vtg file, duh! if you listen to me, I'm
way past those steps. Then support tells me to e-mail a couple files over
to them. The address I got doesn't go through and if I try to send it to
support, the file sizes are too big. Plus after I hung up, I realized they
never gave me an incident number!

Well enough @!#%
It's 11:00 and Vantage is still accessible (knock on wood).

Check for the obvious, Does your backup tape run at 1:00am? Is it hitting
your live database?

No this is really weird. I shut down and rebooted the server before I left
last night and it is still running fine (knock on wood). The thing is that
once the database gets locked, nothing can connect to it (vantage, data
dictionary, Report builder, results, procedure editor.) I can load any of
these up without a database connection fine and then try connecting to the
database from the file menu and it just hangs. I tried running from
different VTG files, using long command lines, etc. nothing worked. So far,
the only pattern I've found is that both lock ups occurred at 1:00 am and
1:00 pm (I can tell this based upon a AutoRpts reporting log - don't see
anything in either the vantage.lg or NT event viewer that points this out.).
Now I know this is getting far fetched, but yesterday being Oct 1, would
give me a date/time of 10010100. I'm wondering if something that was
running (a custom application) and checking dates/time saw this binary
number and cause a glitch with the database and or the _Connect table.
Unless this happens again today (or on a day other than 1's and 0's) to void
this possible theory, I don't have anything else I can think of. The only
fix that worked is the down (complete power off) the server.
Starting/Stopping the database in Progress Explorer did not work. Nothing
new has been added or changed for almost a year on the network (other than
the slow daily growth of the database, currently at 1.35 gig).

Had something like this once when we went live after having some users use a
test database on another server. If I recall correctly when we went live I
did not change the HOSTS file and it was pointing to both servers and these
clients were really really slow. Once I set the client to reference only
one server and uninstalled/reinstalled the client software it ran much
faster. Not saying it is the same but could the HOST name being used by the
clients have gotten changed - whether on the client or in the vantage.vtg.
Another related thought....I use static IP addresses mapped to a Host name
but in a DHCP environment could something not be connecting the name to the
right IP address? Something to do with leases? Just a wild stab.

This is the second time today that this has happened. I have several users
already in Vantage now and they are functioning fine. Anyone else who is
now trying to connect, they just hang forever with no errors or anything,
Ctrl-Alt-Del to see Progress [Not Responding]. To fix it this morning I had
to have everyone log out and then reboot the server. I have checked and
re-checked the NT Server Manager files in use to see if someone has the
Vantage.INI or other files locked in write mode but nothing. I can connect
to the training database without any problems. I have even tried starting
report builder without any database connection, once its started, I would
try to connect to the database and then it just sits there and hangs. I've
left it for 45 minutes and still no connection. I've gone through the
Windows NT event viewer looking for any errors and have gone through the
vantage.lg file. I haven't found anything. Has this happened to anyone
else before? Any ideas what to look for or check?

If you are mapping the client drives from a logon script the batch file
may have become corrupt. I have to have two drives mapped one for Progress
5.1d (epic52) and one for Vantage 6. If a client loses one you get the
splash screen and then it goes away - the end.

Mike,

Does everyone use the same session file to start Vantage?
(vantage.vtg) You may want to see if this file has been changed.
Also try pinging your vantage server by it's name. It may be a DNS
problem, but unlikely if they can connect to training.

Look at the list of items the database logs in the log file when it starts
up and compare it to prior startups to see if anything has changed. Has
crash protection been turned on an off was their a forced entry to the
database in any of the last 5 or 10 restarts. Has anything new been added to
your network or server such as a NIC card or switch configuration in the
past couple of weeks? Are you near any database size limits or hard disk
size limits? Limits I mean atleast 89 percent or less.

Check for the obvious, Does your backup tape run at 1:00am? Is it hitting

last night and it is still running fine (knock on wood).

MIke,

I have see things like this in the past with clients not being able to
connect. In progress explorer is your database running? If so then I'm
guessing the database is fine. I have had to replace a switch before which
corrected the problem of clients that were all on the same switch and could
not login to Vantage. No errors, but the splash screen would go away and
Windows would say that progress was not responding. Other people could
connect that were on different switches. After replacing the one in
question Vantage began running again.

Hope this helps

Well enough bitch'n
It's 11:00 and Vantage is still accessible (knock on wood).
