Hardware Specs Ver 8

So has anyone tried testing v8 on a "minimum" spec PC? That is a PIII-600
with 512MB if I recall correctly.

Brian
Given the previous emails should I care about the differences between a Xeon
or a standard P-4 processor with the same front side bus and memory?

The Xeon has a 2MB L2 cache while the P-4 has a 1MB L2 cache. Its all
"Geek" to me. :-)

The PC's in question run will run Vantage 8 a year from now and the usual
Office type apps.

I may get burned but all new PCs here, praying they will be "future ready" for V8.0 are:
3Ghz P4 on 400Mhz bus
1GB RAM
80GB disk
128MB video (Geforce FX5200 type)
10/100/1000 NIC (currently on 100Mb switches)
Licensed for XP-Pro loaded with Win2K-Pro for now.
If Vantage 8.0 needs more than this on the clients we may have to freeze at 6.10.

Data Collection PCs will be the last upgraded and will be whatever is least expensive at the time but will run. Our current DC PCs are Celeron 300-500Mhz with 64MB RAM and 2GB disks and handle DC just fine.

I think the Xeon cache difference is mainly an issue for servers and server OS configs relying on multi-threading. Shouldn't be an issue for clients so I'd go with whatever is cheaper.

Mitchell,

Xeon's are optimized for multi-processing in a multi-processor environment.
Therefore, Xeon's are typically used in servers (which perform multiple
tasks simultaneously) and high-powered workstations (which need to do
complex math on large data sets). While the extra cache in a Xeon could
improve performance, it depends greatly on the application being used. I
don't think it would do much for Vantage and/or be worth the extra cost. We
have a dual 3.0 GHz Xeon server and P4's in our clients.
