Hardware Specifications for 9.05 Server on Virtual Environment

Thanks for the advice, I will look into it as part of the overall development.

Depends on the number of consecutive users and how big your current DB is.

Only recommendation I can make at this point is do not use VMWare ESXi as does not perform well with progress. ESX does fine from what I understand.

Hi
We have just spec'd out a new server environment with Epicor 9 in mind
(we are on V.8.03.405a Progress at the moment 19 users maybe more soon)
this is 2 servers and a SAN.
2 x Xeon X5650 2.66Ghz 6 core (Per server) 1 server Epicor 1 for
everything else16Gb Ram (per server)HP Storage Works P2000 G3 SAN
Starter Kit which comes with (Dual FC controller, 24-drive bay SFF
chassis, (2) 8-port 8 Gb switches, (4) 8 Gb HBAs, SFPs and cables,
Storage Optimization Application (SOA) software)12 x 600GB 15k SAS HDD2
x Win 2008 Enterprise 64Bit licenced for 4 VMs per copy
We put this spec to our Epicor Reseller and they agreed this would be
sufficient to run E9 when we upgrade

Something I was told by the MS rep for Dell is the VM licenses are only valid if you are running Hyper-V. Microsoft licenses the OS in a very specific manner.

In a cost saving suggestion make sure you want to commit to using FC. FC is more expensive than alternatives such as 10 gig Ethernet. I would recommend a minimum of 32 gig RAM. You will be surprised how fast it gets used. Our environment is licensed for around 35 users and 905 our RAM usage went up from 8 gig to 12 gig. Hi

From the imformation given to us by our supplier (who will also configure the system) the way we are going to use Hyper-v will fall into the right requirements.

The allocation of RAM will be 16Gb per physical server with the Epicor VM using all the resources of 1 server, the other server will run the other VM's, Each server will also act as failover if one of them has "issues" The FC is part of the SAN starter kit, the system has no single point of failure which was our goal.

It is expensive @ £32k but it gives us the resources and protection we require.

I appreciate what you say with the RAM, Epicor loves its memory, we will be testing before deployment and if more is required there is provision to add it.

Based on that information it looks like you have a pretty solid starting point for your virtualization.

I wish I had advice on the Hyper-v but I never did any of my Epicor 9 testing in hyper-v. Only suggestion is make sure you look into the advanced Hyper-V management tools if you believe think that you might add in another hypervisor later on. This will enable some similar features that VMWare offers.
