Handhelds vs. tablet etc

We are looking at implementing bar coded lot/serial tracking for issuing material and for processing jobs.  My question is what are people using and having good luck with Handhelds (Which Models) or is there a tablet type solution that is working. We are currently on 9.05.702 but hopefully will be moving to 10 soon.

I’ve had success with Microsoft Surface Pro’s running the MES client with a Symbol/Motorola Bluetooth scanner.

I’ve never been a fan of the handhelds or the handheld UI.  8-10 years ago, different story.Â

Even for Full Inventory or even Job and Sales Picking, I’ve used a rugged laptop with a wired or Bluetooth on a rolling kiosk/cart.

We are in the final stages of implementing handhelds for monthly inventory (count entry) and daily labor transactions. On the recommendation of Epicor, we bought Intermec CK71 devices and the necessary Epicor module, etc. We are currently running 10.0.700.4.

I think that they are going to accomplish what we want them to, but they (in my opinion) are not very user-friendly. The RDP interface to access Epicor and just overall use of the devices just feels very cumbersome to me.

I think that there are probably better options out there, but I don't have any experience to suggest what those options may be.

Just my .02
