>From the hardware end...I used to sell similar products...
The devices do have a mac address (a must because they obtain the only real
IP from the ISP).
They do work with Cable Modems and DSL. As far as the ISP is concerned
there is only one device attached. The security is good. They are very
fast compared to using Internet Connection Sharing. The only trick is that
you will need to configure most of these devices a little to get certain
software to work, like dialpad or Netmeeting. Then again, if you are using
ICS, this is no more difficult.
I have liked these devices since they hit the market in the $300 range. I
am happy to see they are hitting the home market now.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] OT - inexpensive 'net sharing
Thanks for the heads-up. I am relying on Norton Internet Security at home
plus a small hub to share a cable modem connection and not feeling really
good about security. One question - does the device include a NIC as its
Ethernet port? My cable service (AT&T RoadRunner) used the MAC address of
the NIC to validate the connection and allow login. They charge an extra
$10/mo for two more MACs. Instead I am using Internet Connection Sharing
(free in Win-98) and have two NICs in my master PC (one to the cable modem
and the other to the hub). If the Barricade has its own NIC (and MAC) it
might satisfy the cable login and also allow sharing without having to have
the master PC on all the time plus add another level of security.
Thanks,
-Todd C.

Subject: [Vantage] OT - inexpensive 'net sharing
Hi All.... this is off topic, but is a great inexpensive product that may
be of interest to lots of you.
SMC Networking is selling an internet sharing box, the "Barricade" for as
little as $100. I've been using one for my home network for that last
month and continue to be impressed with this great little device. It's not
quite industrial strength, but great for home, remote office, or even some
of you that are still using dial-up connections at work.
It's a router / firewall / print server and 4 port 100Mb switch all in
one. Multiple PCs can share a net connection through address translation.
* On its WAN side there is both a serial port and10Mb ethernet for just
about any connection (cable, DSL, modems, ISDN) I'm using dial on demand
to a USR Courier modem, till my telco comes out of the dark ages.
* It does NAT for all the machines on the LAN side (your choice of private
network IP addresses)
* Does DHCP for up to 253 hosts, you pick the range of IPs. Mix 'n match
with static IPs, if you like.
* Parallel port print server, talks standard lpr. (lpr driver for older
windoze included.)
* Firewall. Blocks (actually ignores) all outside traffic by default. Can
be configured to selectively pass data, and allows one "DMZ" host to be
wide open.
* Web based configuration for all of the above.
Some places have recently raised the price... Insight.com used to have it
for $100, but it's currently back up to $133. Still a heck of a good
deal. Just for a print server or mini-switch alone.
