I installed new servers a few months ago and we are using an external LTO.
We shopped Dell/Gateway/IBM for servers - Dell treated us terribly - It was like dealing with used car salesmen. IBM just didn't like returning phone calls so we went with Gateways. Gateway 2u rack servers actually include all the drive carriers - Dell's were extra. Gateway has room for 6 scsi drives, Dell only 5. Gateway supported RAID 10, Dell said they wouldn't - even though the controller was designed for it. (If you make a support call for Gateway servers you actually end up talking to IBM as they are contracted for the server support) There is only some much life left in DLT technology - so we opted for the LTO - better speed - more capacity - its newer so it should be around awhile. We purchased our LTO 3rd party - much cheaper - and being external it can be moved to another box quickly for disaster recovery purposes.
My 2 bits,
Charles

I have a fairly new LTO drive from Dell and I love it. It is fast, reliable
and very easy to operate.

Looking at a pair of new servers, possibly from Dell.
Does anyone have any info or opinions on DLT vs LTO tape drives???
Dell is pushing the LTO tape drives as being more reliable then the DLT
drives.
Of course, at $ 2,900 vs $ 1,100 for the DLT unit I would expect the LTO
drives to virtually walk on water.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Todd Anderson
