FW: Labor collection

Amy,

I'm not really supposed to bring this up yet, but I hate to see anybody
pursue an outside system without knowing what is on the horizon. My
company is in the process of releasing an intensely bar-code driven data
collection system as Open Source under the GNU General Public License.
It was initially developed for the BAAN ERP, but we wrote it in such a
way that conduits could be developed to accomodate any system that
allows data to be imported / exported. Here is where the project is
being uploaded (we expect to have all of the facilities, including
current Windows binaries, in place by January 31st):

http://sourceforge.net/projects/sabernetdcs/

and here is a "work-in-progress" theory of operation section:

http://sabernetdcs.sourceforge.net/theory_of_operation/

If there are any time sensitive questions out there (i.e. you need to
know "now" if this is going to work for you), I can entertain them -
otherwise I suggest hanging tight until our formal announcement at the
end of this month.

Hope this helps,
--

I'm just trying to figure out if anyone has purchased a system outside of
Vantage/Epicor that is more efficient. The current Data Collection Module
for 5.00.342 is ridiculously complicated with too many steps for our shop
personnel. Just looking to price a more simple solution. Maybe DC has
improved in more recent version of Vantage? Please advise. Thank you.

Who has a good solution for labor collection? The Vantage option doesn't
seem reasonable simple for us. It's quicker to do manual entries. Please
advise. Thank you.

Can't help you - We've been using vantage data collection throughout our
entire shop across 3 plants for over 2 years and we like it.
Amy -

Out of curiosity what is so complicated?? We have been using D.C. since we
purchased Vantage (one of the first things we implemented). It took a few
months for the guys to get use to it since they use to just log their time
on a time sheet. But we have no problems with the guys understanding.

Have a Nice Day,

Perhaps if you were more specific as to your specific problems/issues the group could better answer your question.

For example, what do you make? How have you accumulated (if at all) labor transactions in the past? Are your operators computer literate? Do they speak English? And (and this is an important one!) what does management want to get from labor collection AND is management willing to be firm to ensure that the desired results are obtained?

Labor collection in Vantage (or any system) usually isn't a "one-size-fits-all" scenario. There are lots of permutations that can occur depending on your business.

Amy,

Now that Vantage and Vista share the same code base you might ask your
EPICOR sales rep if you can convert your Vantage license to a Vista license.
You would think the database conversion from Vantage to Vista should be a
no-brainer ...

Amy,

Be careful about moving from Vantage to Vista. It's been a school of hard
knocks for us. Vista is missing little things (holes in programming), like
a way to put orders on hold.

Amy,

That version should not be that difficult. Maybe, you. have too many
features turned on. Go into data collection configuration and see what you
have turned on. Turn off anything you have turned on that you don't need.
