Thanks to all for the feedback. Our first inventory we did the same
thing with the WIP and Production Detail report. It does take a long
time to count everything with the reports so we were looking to ease the
process. Entering counts into an Access database worked great but I
still had trouble finding the right data in Vantage to duplicate the
entire WIP report so I could automatically produce a variance report. I
finally had to give up (for now) and created a local table to manually
enter the WIP data to get some variances.
Thanks again for you help,
Butch

Here is how we handle WIP at PI time...
Ensured all jobs that should have been closed were actually closed
(sounds like common sense but after the first time you spend an hour
trying to find a job that was already out the door/on the shelf and
finally find someone to fess up "oh, that job is long gone" you'll
understand).
Any raw material not already consumed by a job is returned back into
inventory.
Any completed pieces received into FGI.
This is usually done in preparation for PI and begins a few days before.
On count day (it should be noted that we do not run production during
PI) we run the WIP report and production detail reports for all open
jobs. All the info. for each job is contained in the PD report so we
utilize this as our "tag". This 'tag' is carried to the floor and wip
is verified. If adjustments are needed we make correcting transactions
at that point. Our marked up report is the source document of these
adjusting transactions and is saved, along with the tags with our PI
package for the auditors.
May not work for everyone but works pretty well for us.

Yes - WIP is REAL fun when it comes to a physical inventory!! You know
darn well the system knows how many pieces should be at each operation
of each job at any given time. I wish Epicor could program Vantage such
that WIP could be included in the normal physical inventory process
(i.e. count tags be generated in job number order/by operation). Then,
counts could be entered/posted -- it would take WIP physical inventory
reconcilation/adjusting from nearly 2 days to less than 1 day (like RAW
& FG)!! I believe Epicor's stance is that at a physical inventory, in a
perfect world, you would not have any WIP; HOWEVER... (if your familar
with the commercial, isn't that why CVS Pharmacy exists, because we
don't live near "PERFECT"?!)
Thanks!

To audit WIP, which is real fun by the way.
I would print out the work in process report and out each job one by
one.
Go through the materials and labor, this worked for us. But took about
2
days.

Subject: [Vantage] Full Physical Inventory
We are in the middle of a full physical inventory and I would like to
see
how other folks are performing the task. The warehouse items are pretty
straight forward because you can use the Count Entry form. We have
found
WIP, Incoming Inspection, DMR and RMA to be a little more challenging
because they are in more of a "queue" than a physical location. I have
created an Access database to enter the count tags and have found most
of
the tables to produce variance reports:
DMRHead -> DMR
RcvDtl, FirstArt, NonConf -> Inspection Processing
RMARcpt -> RMA
The real problem I'm having is coming up with the WIP totals in Vantage.
I've tried reports from the PartWIP, PartTran, JobAsmbl.IssuedQty,
JobMtlIssuedQty tables but none seem to be consistent with what we are
counting. I've compared each of these tables against the Work In
Process
report but none consistently match - of course when I read the help file
that the Work In Process report has "simulated Cost of Sales and WIP
activity ", I'm not sure this is a reliable report for actuals.
Any help would be appreciated,
Butch
